Printer Changer --------------- Install ------- Just copy to directory and run. Use the usual right click drag in explorer to create a shortcut. There is no ini file with the program as it will create a default one when it is run and quit. Hence if you think the ini file is corrupt just delete it. You should also delete the ini file when upgrading versions. Uninstall --------- Delete any shortcuts you have made, the program file and the ini file. Printer changer makes no changes to registry or system.ini. It does re-write the order of the device section in win.ini if you change the order of the printers (but doesn't change the contents of that section). Overview -------- This puts an icon in the system tray. Right click the icon and a list of the system printers pops up. The default printer is ticked. Click another printer to change that one to be the default. If the default printer already is correct then you can either click it again or faster click the blank area at bottom of the popup menu (e.g. a left 10 pixels move, click). After you have done one change a left click on the icon toggles between the current printer and the last printer. Hoevring the mouse over the icon brings up the name of the current printer. Options ------- This is selected from the right click popup and presents a list of the system printers. Just drag and drop to change the order. Click ok to confirm the changes or cancel to abort them. Also on this form are boxes to change: Date Icon changes the tray icon to either the current date (default) or a printer icon. (Note that selecting show date will update the icon, after check time or shift time delays but deselecting show date will not restore the default icon until program is restarted.) Splash time changes how long the start up slash is displayed Check time controls how often the program checks to see if the date has changed. If you work through midnight you need this for the date icon to be updated. The shorter the time is the more quickly the date icon will change after midnight but the more load you put on windows the rest of the day. The default is 10 seconds which is a tiny cpu load. ShiftTime controls how long the program waits after loading before shifting the icon. I like my icon as the date and I like it to be always next to the time. This sets a delay so that all of the programs in the start group have finished loading. ShiftOnce controls whether the icon is shifted only once after the initial delay time or whether it is also shifted at every check time. I don't change the tray programs enough to have this always happening as default and in any case there is also a command on the popup menu to shift the icon. Shifting also makes the tray icons flicker which can be annoying. Fix HPGL controls whether the fix HPGL option is shown on the right click menu. Fix HPGL is only of interest if you import HPGL plot files into MS Word (possibly other WPs too). Most HPGL imports ok but if there are a lot of data points it can fail. fix HPGL opens a form to select the file(s) which are then processed so that they will import ok. Version History --------------- Version 3.01 Bug fix - about form text of "works with 98/98/NT" to "works with 95/98/NT" Bug fix - rebooting PC does not save ini file so new options are lost. Change so that ok button on option form saves new options. Version 3 Changed the way the tray icon was done as one person had problems. Added a form to allow adjustment of settings rather than having to edit win.ini or PrtChg.ini Changed from left click popup to right click popup as this seems the more common Add left click toggles printers Combined two versions of printer changer into one as only difference was 'fix HPGL' (about 30K difference) then added option not to display 'fix hpgl'. Version 2 This is the same as version 1 but with one additional function, namely: Extra popup entry to fix HPGL files to over come MS Word's HPGL filter bug. The bug is that long strings of data points don't convert so this fix adds Pen Up, Pen Down commands to break the string. Multiple files can be selected in the the select file dialog. These processed in turn when the process file button is clicked. The program creates temporary files of *.~gl. These are deleted after the program completes (or not if you get a crash :-(). Long filenames are supported. This function is probably only of interest to those importing hpgl pictures. If that is not you then version 1 is the smaller file. Version 2 History ----------------- 2.52 Changed email address. Revised about message box. 2.51 Re-compiled with new complier options disabled in case causes problems. 2.50 Re-compiled in 32 bit with some sections rewritten. Now works on NT as well as 95/98.
