DownloadIt combines the power of automated "site grabbers" with the flexibility of a browser.

WebSite Database

DownloadIt conveniently stores all of your website information in an easy to use database format.

The fields stored per website are as follows:

Web Site - the name you want to use - not a "www..."
Comment - useful for date of access, rating, up to 512 characters
URL path - this is the "www..." web address
UserID - permanently store access id
Password - permanently store password
HrefFile - runtime file for downloading or slideshow
File Directory - stores cache drive and directory information

There is no fixed limit on the number of websites per database or the number of databases that can be created.

Parsing

Parsing is simply the process of scanning text-based web documents, usually "html" files, to find downloadable files.

Parsing used to be a fairly simple process. Images that were automatically loaded into your browser were identified by "img src =", while items loaded when a button or image was pressed was identified by "href =". The current use of "java" and "javascript" has created a much broader array of commands, particularly in the area of multimedia.

Striving to keep ahead of the game, DownloadIt automatically identifies text files for parsing regardless of filetype and searches through all java and javascript for file references.

Downloading

Downloading is usually started by using your web browser to find a starting "URL" or web address. We prefer the Netscape browser because the "open frame in new window" lets you access urls for frame-based html.

Once the URL is copied to the URL Path, simply click Enter to download. Files are automatically stored in a web cache using original directories for offline browsing using any browser or our pcBrowser product.

Html files can be recursively parsed and downloaded to search the website level by level. Complete control at each level allows you to easily skip over unwanted files and directories.

Slideshow

If you have tried any of the "site grabbers" which can run for hours with little clue as to what they are doing, you will appreciate the slideshow feature.

You can view html and image files as they are downloaded, or use offline after the download is complete using the same url lists used to run the download. Images can be viewed fullsize or shrink to fit.

For offline viewing, you can set the slide interval from 0.5 to 30 seconds. Files can be screened using a text search or numeric starting sequence. The slideshow can also be paused and restarted.
