Service

Often used as an informal term for the implementation of a standard Internet protocol, for example the Time service or Finger service. Service is also a formal Windows NT term for a program that can be automatically started when the system is booted and will continue to run until the system is shut down. The service will continue to run even when no one is logged on the system.
