Q: I have another tweaking utility.  Do I need to uninstall it before installing or using X-Setup?

A: No, X-Setup does not interfere with any other "tweaker" programs. However, X-Setup eats all other tweakers for lunch so you probably won't need anything besides X-Setup ;-).  X-Setup includes almost all the tweaks of most other system tweaking applications combined - and then some. :)

Q: I would like to have an option for enabling Auto Login on Windows 95 or Windows 98 computers. Is this possible?

A: No, due to technical problems. But you can view http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q152/1/04.asp?FR=0 where a detailed description is available. Thanks to Jon Scott [jscott@bellsouth.net] for this tip.

Q: The file association option in Explorer and the options dialog in Internet Explorer have disappeared! How to show them again?

A: Check "Appearance" -> "Start menu" -> "Visible Items" -> "Visible Items in Start->Settings". Disabling an item in the Start menu *ALSO* disabled the option wherever it might appear elsewhere in Windows.

Q: I just installed X-Setup and now XXX has disappeared/XXX does not longer work/XXX is unusable. Is this related to the installation of X-Setup?

NO NO NO. Just installing X-Setup does NOT change anything on your system. Also, clicking on the a plug-in in the left pane of X-Setup does still not change anything. There are only two situations when changes are made: a) when you click the "Apply" button b) when you use a wizard because a wizard automatically commits your changes. If you want to know when changes were made, have a look at the file TEMP\XQ_XSET_Logfile.txt. X-Setup logs all plug-ins that were applied to this file.

Q: After using X-Setup, the Quick Launch Bar capability of my taskbar no longer works. How do I fix it?

Inside X-Setup, go to System -> File System -> Data Folders -> General and change the item "Program Data" to your AppData folder. Normally, this folder is located at "C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA". Please check if this folder exists BEFORE you change it. You should normally find a least one folder in it, called "Microsoft".

Q: Can you create a plug-in that allows MTU tweaks?

A: No, changes to these settings can hang your internet connection totally so you can't even contact Xteq Systems if you have a problem. These settings are too dangerous and we won't include it in X-Setup. However, some other authors might decide to create plug-ins for this.  AXCEL216 provides excellent details about how to tweak MTU and many other great settings on his website at http://users.aol.com/axcel216/.

Q: If you navigate through the display using the UP- or DOWN-keys, X-Setup does not load any plug-in. Bug?

A: No, it's a feature! Because some plug-in might take really long to load, we have decided not to load a plug-in if you have activate it but when you hit ENTER. This way, navigating is fast and you can decide when to load a plug-in.

Q: Can I create my own plug-ins for X-Setup?

A: Certainly! You can use any text editor, even Windows Notepad, to author or edit your plug-ins to suit your needs. We also have a free X-Setup SDK available for download on the Xteq Systems website at http://www.xteq.com  which you can download to help accomplish plug-in authoring. Please share your own plug-ins with us and we might even feature them on our website. This of course is up to you.

Q: Why are certain options grayed out on my system?

A: This is normal, and simply means that your computer probably does not have the software or hardware the plug-ins or wizards would change options for. If you do have the hardware or software and have problems with grayed out options, please send us details and a registry export or the .INI settings of the item(s) so we can analyze it.

Q: How can I get more information about specific plug-ins?

A: On all plug-ins, if you right-click them while they are selected, a menu will appear on your screen. One of the options in the menu says "Information" - click it and you will have some tabs that will provide more information about the plug-in.

Q: What if I find a tweak or setting that would make a good plug-in, and a plug-in doesn't already exist?

A: Two options:  1)  Send the information, with relevant details and necessary registry or .INI file exports to info@xteq.com so we may review it and possibly make a plug-in for it.  2) You can also make your own plug-in based on the code of existing plug-ins, or with the help of the X-Setup SDK, free on the Xteq Systems website.  You can make your own plug-ins available on your website and may feel free to send them to Xteq Systems too, if you wish.

Q: After uninstalling X-Setup, the icon inside the Control Panel is still visible. How to remove it?

A: Delete the file XQXSetup.CPL in your \windows\system or \winnt\system32 folder.

Q: I would like to change the name (text) of the Start button. How?

A: This is not possible with X-Setup because it would require us to change some core Windows DLL/EXE files. This is something we will never do! However, EppieDesktop can be used to do this; it's available at http://www.u.arizona.edu/~jepstein/epdsk/.

Q: I no longer can shut down my computer from the Start Menu.

A: We are researching the problem. If you have this problem feel free to submit details to us so we can work on a solution.  Note: This problem is very rare.

Q: What browsers does X-Setup have plug-ins for?

A: So far we have plug-ins that support Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator 3.x and lower, NeoPlanet 5.0, and Opera 3.60. You will find options for these under |Internet| in the plug-in tree, or on the "Wizards" menu in X-Setup under "Web Browsers." The reason Netscape 4.x is not supported is because the settings for it are stored in a preferences text file and not the Windows registry.  If X-Setup does not have plug-ins for your browser you may e-mail info@xteq.com with the relevant information about it such as version, registry or .INI details, and request new plug-ins for it.

Q: Why isn't my Instant Messaging program supported in X-Setup?

A: We have included plug-ins that let you adjust many options of the most popular Instant Messaging programs. However, if we have missed one that you use, please e-mail info@xteq.com with the name, version, and registry exports of it. Please include details of what each option in the registry does, what acceptable and default values are, and only include those that are not usually adjustable in the ordinary user interface within the IM program. We may add support in future releases for more Instant Messaging programs.

Q: Why aren't there any plug-ins for my video card in X-Setup?

A: The reason for this is that we only have certain video boards available for us to test plug-ins on.  Each video card requires different settings to tweak it or to adjust its settings.  If you have a popular video card and there are features which can be changed in the registry, .INI files, or AUTOEXEC.BAT settings or features which aren't changeable in the normal user interface, then if you e-mail info@xteq.com with the details, including video card name, manufacturer, their website address, the operating system the settings are for, where the settings are changed and what they do, what the default values are and other options for those items, we may include plug-ins in future versions that support your video card.  We aren't interested in overclocking settings because we consider them too dangerous.

Q: I recently upgraded to a newer version of a program or hardware driver [video card, etc.] which X-Setup has support for a previous version of, but the plug-ins no longer seem to work with the latest version.  What should I do?

A: This may happen from time to time when a new version of a program or a hardware driver is released and a user upgrades.  If this has happened to you and the plug-ins no longer work properly with the newer version, please e-mail info@xteq.com and let us know so we can update the appropriate settings and/or plug-ins, or add support for newer features, taking into account any changes in the way the program operates in the registry, .INI,  or other configuration files.  Please include any relevant information.

Q: Is there a place I can talk to others about X-Setup?

A: Currently there is no official place for X-Setup users to exchange information, but there are several options.  You can setup a web page devoted to X-Setup, or possibly the creation of new plug-ins for it.  Many X-Setup users visit the LockerGnome newsgroups at news://news.lockergnome.com which will let users exchange ideas and sometimes even find answers to questions about or any problems related to X-Setup.  You could even create or join special-interest groups on Instant Messaging programs if you wish.  Be sure to check the Xteq website periodically to ensure you have the most current version and the latest plug-ins. :)
