Step 2. Get your activation key.

Step 3. Installing and running JBuilder Foundation on Solaris
(Please read these instructions entirely before installing JBuilder Foundation).

This version of JBuilder Foundation contains an updated version of JDK 1.2.2 and JPDA. You should use this version instead of any earlier version that you might have.

Note: You may need to install Solaris System Patches to run the latest version of the JDK which is included in this installer. If you think you may need to install these patches, they can be found on the following web page: http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/install-solaris-patches.html (These patches are created and distributed by Sun, and are in no way supported by Inprise Corporation.)

Installing JBuilder Foundation You will need write access to the directory locations you specify during the installation process. You should also have at least 150 MB of available hard disk space.

  1. To start the installation script, do one of the following:
    • From the File Manager: Double-click on install.
    • From the command line: Enter sh install.bin.
  2. Follow the prompts and click Next.
  3. Accept the license agreement when prompted, then click Next.
  4. Choose the directory where you want JBuilder Foundation installed, then click Next.. Do not choose a directory that contains spaces in its name. JBuilder Foundation will not run if the name of the directory in which it is installed contains spaces.
  5. Click Done. You can now run JBuilder Foundation.
Installation Notes
  • Installing JBuilder as "root"
This note applies only if you want to install JBuilder Foundation using "su" when logged in as a regular user.

XWindows has security restrictions that can cause a GUI application to fail if running the application as a different user than the one logged in. One such case is when you open a terminal window and use the "su" command to become "root". The error message issued is usually 'Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server'. This is a security feature, not a bug. To avoid this problem open a terminal window and type the following command:
        xhost +localhost
This command notifies XWindows that any user on your machine is authorized to use your display. After the installation you can run the command:
        xhost -localhost
to reset the value to the default.

  • insufficient available disk space reported with NFS volumes mounted
If you have any NFS volumes mounted, the installation may fail with an error reporting insufficient available disk space. If you encounter this error and are certain they you have enough disk space available for installation, disable NFS before installing JBuilder, then re-enable it after the installation has successfully completed.

Running JBuilder Foundation You can launch it by executing /jbuilder/bin/jbuilder.

Installing the JBuilder Foundation Documentation

To install the JBuilder Foundation documentation, you will need write access to the directory location where JBuilder is installed. You should have at least 70 MB of available hard disk space.

  1. Open a terminal window. To continue the installation process, you will need to add the location of the JDK to your path.
    • From the command line: Enter ksh.
    • From the command line: Enter export PATH=/usr/local/jbuilder30/jdk1.2.2/bin:$PATH.
    • From the command line: Enter sh docs/install.bin to launch the installation program.

  2. When prompted, choose the JDK1.2.2 from the list.
  3. Follow the prompts and click Next.
  4. Accept the license agreement when prompted, then click Next.
  5. Choose the directory where JBuilder Foundation is installed, then click Next.
  6. Click Done. You can now open the online documentation from the JBuilder IDE with the Help|Help Topics command.
