Dial-On-Demand Overview
The Sambar Server can establish dial-up connections to your ISP via the
Dial-on-Demand configuration parameter. If configured, the
server attempts to connect to your ISP when an outgoing connection
is necessary. The current implementation does not have knowledge of
your local area network addresses -- so all proxy traffic will result
in an outgoing dial-up being initiated. Microsoft and Netscape browsers
support the routing of local traffic so that only internet-bound traffic
is routed to the Sambar Server proxy (you will need an understanding of
DNS to properly route local traffic).
Dial-On-Demand Configuration
The dial-on-demand configuration allows the administrator to configure
the RAS entry to use for outgoing connections. This entry must have the
phone number and domain pre-configured for use when connecting via the
Sambar Server. In addition, a timeout period is defined allowing the
dial-up connection to be dropped after a fixed period of inactivity.
The Sambar Server must be configured with both the
Dial-On-Demand User and Dial-On-Demand Password configuration
parameters appropriate to the DUN/RAS connection. These parameters
may not be left blank.
Dial-On-Demand Timeouts
The dial-on-demand feature includes a timeout property that specifies
how long after the last active connection the dial-up should remain
connected. This period can be set to as little as one minute, however,
because this feature uses the Sambar Server scheduler which operates
in 2 minute increments, the dial-up connection could stay active for
up to 2 minutes -- even if a lower timeout value is configured.
Existing Connections
If the dial-on-demand feature is enabled and the server detects an
existing open dialup session, the server attempts to connect with
the remote host using the existing dialup session. In addition,
the dial-on-demand feature is disabled for a period of 5 minutes
during which time the existing dialup session is used. After the
5 minute timeout, the dial-on-demand feature is again enabled and
further remote access triggers a dialup event (which will again
use the dialup connection if it persists).
Existing connections
The Sambar Server dialer will not take over existing connections. This
means that the dialer may fail if another application (e.g. DUN or RAS)
us using the configured RAS entry.
