You have purchased the most innovative, powerful and easy-to-use file compression program around. This coordinated set of Zip utilities incorporates features that make file compression and uncompression a breeze. ZipMagic allows you to display zipped files as Windows folders, PLUS it provides an interface for you to zip files in a more conventional way. This is a summary of some of the newest features: Support for Anti-Virus Software As Zip files may contain viruses, ZipMagic 2000 can be configured to work with current versions of Ontrack Fix-It Utilities 99, as well as other anti-virus programs, by scanning zipped files for viruses. New Help for Internet Downloading The new DownloadMagic™ feature makes downloading easier by creating a separate pop-up window when a download activates. In this download window, users can restart crashed downloads, start and stop downloads or simply queue multiple downloads to occur one after the other. New Features for Zip Power Users Many of ZipMagic’s features are now available via a Windows command line version, accessible from a DOS box in Windows. The command line allows users to create Zip files and self-extracting Zip files, span Zip files over multiple diskettes, specify input text files (response files) containing the names of files to be zipped, password protect and update the contents of Zip files. ZipMagic 2000 also has a stand-alone DOS command line option, which features basic zipping and unzipping and is useful for creating batch files or manipulating files in DOS without Windows running. Along with these, ZipMagic 2000 has a fully integrated interface with new wizards and an easy-to-use file viewer. There are special disk spanning capabilities and self- extracting executable features as well. 2. ZIPTOOLS; A NOTE Former users of ZipMagic: If you have installed and used either ZipMagic 1.0 or ZipMagic 98, you may have used the ZipTools feature. The new ZipMagic 2000 interface is replacing ZipTools in this and future versions of ZipMagic. However, ZipTools is still automatically installed from your ZipMagic 2000 CD if you are running Windows 95 or 98. ZipTools is currently not compatible with pre-release versions of Windows 2000, and will not be automatically installed on Windows 2000 systems. The ZipTools user guide will be available in PDF format from the Mijenix/Ontrack web site. You can access ZipTools by navigating to the ZipMagic installation directory and running the program ziptools.exe. Any Windows 2000 updates to original products are normally available via EasyUpdate. You can download a standalone ZipTools guide in PDF format from the Mijenix web site at http://www.mijenix.com. 7. KNOWN PROBLEMS/ISSUES EZSetup: Sometimes this feature freezes if the Outlook email program is running. If this happens, just close Outlook and EZSetup will continue running normally. Windows 2000 compatibility: ZipMagic does not support certain advanced Windows 2000 features such as extremely long file names and Intellimirror. AV Scanner: If you are using Fix-It Utilities 99 as your command-line anti-virus scanner, you must use the “/s” option, which causes it to scan into sub-folders. GENERAL WARNINGS Heeding these warnings may prevent problems using ZipMagic 98: 1. Do not attempt to compress your \Windows folder, or any of its subfolders! Compressed folders can not be accessed until after ZipMagic is loaded. Because Windows loads before ZipMagic, it must remain unzipped otherwise Windows will not boot. 2. In general, it is better not to rename a folder that contains a complex application (which happens when you compress a folder). When the programs are installed, path information is often stored in the registry, .ini files, and so on. That being so, renaming an program folder behind the registry's back, so to speak, will render the path information invalid which may prevent the application from running. 3. ZipMagic does not incorporate file locking, so we suggest that you do not use ZipMagic on database files that can be accessed by multiple users at the same time. 4. When ZipMagic encounters an encrypted Zip file, it asks for the password, and caches or "remembers" it for that session of Windows so that you don’t have to re-enter it every time you access the folder. If this poses a security risk, you can set a hotkey to force ZipMagic to forget the password. 5. There may be incompatibilities with device drivers written by other companies. We apologize in advance for any such problems and would very much like to hear about the problems you encounter, if any. 6. There is a major design problem in the Windows 95 Novell client for NetWare. This client does not currently incorporate a network redirector and therefore all device drivers are left blind with respect to file activities on the servers to which the client is attached. This has very serious consequences as, for example, anti-virus device drivers completely fail to prevent access to infected data on the NetWare servers. ZipMagic too is affected, as it cannot present Zip archives as folders on network drives when using the Novell Windows 95 NetWare client. The workaround to this Novell client problem is to use Microsoft's client for NetWare which ships with Windows 95. The Microsoft client incorporates a network redirector and device drivers and anti-virus drivers will work fine with it. 9/1/99
