FileQuest Menu Help

File Menu

  • Choosing "Create New Folder" menu item, located within the File Menu, will show the "Create New Folder" dialog box. The dialog box allows you to change the folder that the new folder will be created in, you can also change the name of the folder that will be created. Pressing 'OK' will create the new folder. Pressing the 'Insert' key has the same effect as the "Create New Folder" menu item.
  • Choosing the "Open New Folder" menu item, located within the File Menu, will perform two actions:
      1. The first action will be to open the "Create New Folder" dialog box.
      2. After the 'OK' key is pressed in the "Create New Folder" dialog box, the newly created folder will appear as the active folder window.
  • Choosing the "Open Folder" menu item, located within the file menu, will bring up the "Open Folder" dialog box. The "Open Folder" dialog box displays all the folders on your system. Select a folder from the tree to open the folder.
  • Choosing the "Create Shortcut" menu item, located within the file menu, will create a shortcut to the currently selected item in the active folder's window. You can also use drag and drop to create a shortcut, but instead of using the left mouse button to drag, use the right mouse button.
  • Choosing the "Delete" menu item, located within the File Menu, will show the "Confirm File Delete" dialog box, pressing 'No' will cancel the delete. If there are files and folders selected in the active folder's window, then the selected files and folders will be deleted. If no files or folders are selected in the active folder's window, or there is no active folder window, then the selected folder from the explorer window will be selected for deletion.
  • Choosing the "Rename" menu item, located within the file menu, will allow for the renaming of the currently selected file or folder in the active folder's window. If a file or folder is not selected in the active folder's window, then the "Rename Folder" dialog box will appear, and the folder being shown by the active folder window will be renamed. If there are no active folder windows, then the currently selected item in the explorer window will be selected for renaming.
  • Choosing the "Properties" menu item, located within the file menu, will show the properties for the selected file(s) or folder(s).

    The "Properties" item in the File Menu has different meanings when applied to different windows.

      1. For Search windows, selecting "Properties" will show the rules used to create the current search.
      2. For Rules windows, selecting "Properties" will show the rules used to execute the current rule.
      3. For Personal Folders, selecting "Properties" will show the criteria used to create the personal folder.
  • The "Copy To" menu item, located within the File Menu, shows the "Copy To" dialog, this dialog shows all of the folders that are valid targets for a copy operation. If no items are selected, the "Copy To" dialog will ask the location to copy the currently selected folder into. If items are selected within the active folder window, then the "Copy To" dialog will ask the location to copy the selected items into.
  • The "Move To" menu item, located within the File Menu, shows the "Move To" dialog, this dialog shows all of the folders that are valid targets for a move operation. If no items are selected, the "Move To" dialog will ask the location to move the currently selected folder into. If items are selected within the active folder window, then the "Move To" dialog will ask the location to move the selected items into.
  • Choosing the "Run" menu item, located within the File Menu, will bring up the "Run" dialog box. The "Run" dialog box lets you type in or browse for the application that you would like to run. The "Run" dialog box also has a place for the arguments that you would like to pass to the chosen application. You also have the option to add the selected application to the "Go" menu for easy future access. The arguments that you chose for the application will be retained when you run the application from the "Go" menu.
  • The "Recent Window List" list, located within the File Menu, is not an actual menu item, the "Recent Windows List" shows, in order, the folders that you have recently opened and then closed. The "Recent Windows List" can hold between 0 and 9 recent folder windows.
  • Choosing "Exit", located within the File Menu, exits the FileQuest application.

    Disk Menu

  • Choose "Map Network Drive" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, to display the Windows "Map Network Drive" dialog box.
  • Choose "Disconnect Network Drive" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, to display the Windows "Disconnect Network Drive" dialog box.
  • Use the "Erase Diskette" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, to erase all contents on a floppy disk. Choose the "Erase Diskette" option to bring up a list of floppy disk drives on the system. Choose the disk drive from the list that contains the floppy disk you would like to erase.
  • Use the "Copy Disk" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, to make an exact copy of one floppy disk onto another floppy disk. When this option is invoked, a dialog box will display asking you specify the source floppy disk drive and the destination floppy disk drive. The source and destination floppy disk drives can be the same drive, in which case FileQuest will ask you to first insert the source floppy disk, and then to insert the destination floppy disk.
  • The "Label Disk" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, shows the "Label Disk" dialog. This dialog will show all of the disks on your computer that you can label, or re-label. Choose the disk to label, or re-label from this dialog.
  • The "Format Disk" menu item, located within the Disk Menu, shows the "Format Disk" dialog. The "Format Disk" dialog will show all of the disks on your computer that can be formatted. Choose the disk to format from this dialog.
  • The "Create Rescue / Startup Disk" option, located within the Disk Menu, invokes the utility used to create an emergency repair disk on Windows NT. Under Windows 95/98, the "Create Rescue / Startup Disk" option invokes the utility used to create a system startup disk.
  • The "Add / Remove Programs" option, located within the Disk Menu, shows the Windows "Add / Remove Programs Properties" dialog box.

    Edit Menu

  • The "Cut" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, copies a file(s) and / or folder(s) to the clipboard. The files are then deleted from the source folder when they are pasted into another folder.
  • The "Copy" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, copies a file(s) and / or folder(s) to the clipboard.
  • The "Paste" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, pastes an item(s) from the clipboard to the folder that has the focus.
  • The "Copy Path As Text" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, copies the currently selected file path or folder path and file name or folder name onto the clipboard as text. If more than one item is selected, the "Copy Path As Text" item copies the file or folder name that was selected first onto the clipboard.
  • The "Find" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, displays the "Find" dialog box. Use this option to search for files that match specified criteria on your system. You can also search for folders by going to the "Attributes" tab on the "Find" dialog box, and specifying directories.
  • The "Quick Find" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, moves the focus from the currently active item to the "Quick Find" combo box, located on the "Main" toolbar. The "Quick Find" search searches for files on the C: drive that matches the specified criteria showed in the combo box.
  • The "Find Folder" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, displays the "Find Folder" dialog box. Use this option to search for folders that match specified criteria on your system.
  • The "Find Original Folder" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, opens the source folder that contains the currently selected folder in the active search window. This menu item is enabled when you have completed a search for folders, and want to view the original location of a folder in your search window.
  • The "Create Bookmark" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, is used in conjunction with your folder window(s). The "Create Bookmark" menu item opens a sub-menu with the items "Bookmark 1 Ctrl + 1" through 'Bookmark 9 Ctrl + 9". When creating a bookmark, Make the folder that you would like to bookmark the active folder window, then use "Bookmark 1" through "Bookmark 9" to mark this folder with a bookmark. Using the keyboard shortcuts 'Ctrl + 1' through 'Ctrl + 9' has the same effect. Once you have marked a folder, you can return to the folder's window at any time by restoring the bookmark, even if the folder's window has been closed. A bookmark is not permanent, and can be replaced or written over by another bookmark.
  • The "Restore Bookmark" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, is used in conjunction with your folder window(s). The "Restore Bookmark" menu item opens a sub-menu containing the folders that you have previously marked with "Create Bookmark". Select any of the items in this sub-menu to restore the folder's window that was marked. Using the keyboard shortcuts 'Alt + 1' through 'Alt + 9' has the same effect. You can restore bookmarks multiple times.
  • The "Bookmarks List" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, shows the "Bookmarks List" dialog. The "Bookmarks List" dialog contains a list of all the marked folders in your system. You can delete bookmarks from this list, and also select a select a marked folder to open from this list. Deleting a bookmark does not reorder the bookmarks.
  • The "Select" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, displays the "Select By Filter" dialog box. Use the "Select By Filter" dialog box to define the selection criteria for the active folder's window. Once you have selected the criteria and press 'Ok', the files and folders in the active folder's window that match the selection criteria are automatically selected.
  • The "Select All" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, selects all the files and folders contained within the active folder's window.
  • The "Invert Selection" menu item, located within the Edit Menu, inverts the selection in the active folder's window. If no files and folders are selected in the active folder's window, then "Invert Selection" will select all of the files and folders in the active folder's window. If all files and folders are selected in the active folder's window, then "Invert Selection" will deselect all of the files and folders in the active folder's window.

    View Menu

  • The "Explorer Popup Menu" is a sub-menu that is located beneath the View menu. The "Explorer Popup Menu" contains the following items:
  • When the "Personal" menu item is selected, the Personal Folder pane is added to the explorer toolbar. This pane allows you to view and manipulate personal folders.
  • When the "Bookmarks" menu item is selected, the BookMarks pane is added to the explorer toolbar. This pane allows you to view and manipulate bookmarks that you have set.
  • Choose this option to align the explorer toolbar to the left of the FileQuest application.
  • Choose this option to align the explorer toolbar to the right of the FileQuest application.
  • Choose this option to hide the main explorer toolbar.
  • The "Toolbars Popup Menu" contains menu items to show and hide the different toolbars of FileQuest.
  • The "Drives" toolbar contains icons for all hard drives, CD-ROM drives, network drives, etc., that have been mapped onto your system.
  • The "Main" toolbar contains items that are used to manipulate and find files and folders. As well as navigation arrows for easy scrolling through your files and folders.
  • The "Edit" toolbar shows most actions that are found in the "Edit" menu.
  • The "Personal" toolbar shows actions that are used to manipulate personal folders within FileQuest.
  • The "Tools" toolbar shows actions that are under the "Tools" menu item.
  • The "Windows" toolbar shows actions that can be used to manipulate the views that FileQuest is showing.
  • The "Explorer" toolbar toggles the different panes that can be selected onto the main explorer toolbar.
  • Toggle this item to show and hide the text labels accompanying all toolbar icons.
  • Toggle this item to view toolbars in flat mode, or button mode.
  • The "View Popup Menu", located in the View menu, controls how icons are shown in FileQuest folder windows. There are four options.
  • Arrange Icons Popup Menu
  • The "Arrange Icons Popup Menu", located in the View menu, controls the order in which you would like your folders and files shown within the FileQuest folder views.
  • Columns Popup Menu
  • You can choose to toggle the following columns on and off when viewing folders within FileQuest.
  • FileQuest allows you to easily change the size of text for the following items.
  • Choose the "Refresh All" menu item, located within the View menu, to refresh the tree, and all folder windows.
  • The "Choose View Mode" menu item, located in the View menu, allows you to choose the view mode you would like to work in. Two modes can be chosen. The first mode is "Explorer Mode", this mode shows the contents of only one folder at a time. The second mode is "Multiple Folders" mode, this mode allows a user to view the contents of multiple folders at the same time.
  • Show or hide the TaskBar.
  • Show or hide the Status Bar.
  • Show or hide the Address Bar.
  • The "Set Filter" menu item, located within the View menu, allows you to view the contents of the active folder through a filter. Filters are search rules that you define for the active folder. If an item within the folder matches one of the search rules defined, then the item is shown within the folder. You can filter by file extension, file size, file date, etc...
  • The "Remove Filter" menu item, located within the View menu, removes the filter that has been defined for the contents of the active folder.

    Go Menu

  • The "Back" menu item, located within the Go Menu, navigates back one folder in the active folder's window.
  • The "Forward" menu item, located within the Go Menu, navigates forward one folder in the active folder's window.
  • Choosing the "Up One Level" menu item, located within the Go Menu, opens the parent folder of the active folder displayed in the active folder's window.
  • Choosing the "Command Prompt Here" menu item, located within the Go Menu, opens an DOS window with the directory set to the active folder displayed in the active folder's window. If there is no active folder window, then choosing the "Command Prompt Here" menu item will open a DOS window with the directory set to the currently selected folder in the explorer window.
  • The "List of Tools" list is composed of many menu items. These items are the applications that have been added to the Go menu for easy future access. There are three ways to add a new tool, or application, to the Go Menu.
      1. Choosing "Go / Add Tool" will bring up the "Add Tool" dialog box.
      2. Open the FileQuest "Run" dialog by selecting "File / Run", once your application information has been entered, check the "Add to the tools under the 'Go' menu item" checkbox.
      3. Open the "Tools Manager" dialog box by selecting "Go / Tools Manager" and click the "Add" button found in the "Tools Manager" dialog box.
  • Choosing the "Add Tool" menu item, located within the Go Menu, shows the "Add Tool" dialog box. This dialog allows you to name a tool, select the tool from the applications on your disk drives, and pass arguments to the application. The "Add Tool" dialog box also allows you to specify an initial working directory for the application. You can also have FileQuest prompt for arguments every time you use one of your tools by checking the "Prompt for arguments" checkbox. If a file, folder or applications is selected in the active folder's window, then the "Add Tool" dialog box will fill the entry fields in the dialog box with appropriate defaults. You can always change any of the defaults specified. You can also select a tool by dragging an application icon from outside of FileQuest onto the "Add Tool" dialog box. You can also add World Wide Web addresses to the Go menu using the "Add Tool" dialog box.
  • Choosing the "Tools Manager" menu item, located within the Go Menu, shows the "Tools Manager" dialog box. Here you can change the order in which your tools are displayed, delete a tool from the Go Menu, add tools, and edit properties for your different tools. Deleting a tool from the Go Menu will not delete the tool from its location on your system.

    Favorites Menu

  • The "List of Favorites" list is composed of many menu items. These items are the favorite folders that have been added to the Favorites menu for easy future access. There are two ways to add a new favorite to the Favorites menu.

    Choosing "Favorites / Add Favorite" will show the "Add Favorites" dialog box. Open the "Favorites Manager" dialog box by selecting "Favorites / Favorites Manager" and click the "Add" button found in the "Favorites Manager" dialog box.

    Five entries are always found in the "List of Favorites". These are the Desktop, My Computer, Network Neighborhood, Control Panel, and Startup Folder items.

  • Choosing the "Add Favorite" menu item, located within the Favorites menu, will show the "Add Favorites" dialog box. The dialog box has entry fields for; favorites name and the actual location of the favorite folder on the computer. There is also a checkbox labeled "Open using FileQuest". If this box is checked, then the favorite folder will be opened within FileQuest, if this box is not checked, then the favorite folder will be opened using Windows Explorer. If there is an active folder window, then the "Add Favorite" dialog box will fill the entry fields in the dialog box with appropriate defaults. You can always change any of the defaults specified. You can also select a favorite folder by dragging a folder from outside of FileQuest onto the "Add Favorite" dialog box.
  • Choosing the "Favorites Manager" menu item, located within the Favorites menu, will show the "Favorites Manager" dialog box. Here you can change the order in which your favorites are displayed, delete a favorite from the Favorites menu, add favorites, and edit properties for your different favorite folders. There is also a checkbox titled "Add Control Panel Applets to Favorites Menu". Checking this box will create a sub-folder under the "Favorites / Control Panel" menu item, this sub-folder will contain a list of all the control panel applets on your system.

    Personal Menu

  • The "Create New Personal Folder" menu item, located within the Personal menu, shows the "Create New Personal Folder" dialog. Here you can specify a name for the personal folder you are creating, as well as specify criteria for the new personal folder. The criteria that you specify will determine the contents of the personal folder.
  • The "Open New Personal Folder" menu item, located within the Personal menu, will create a new personal folder and then immediately show the personal folder's contents. You are first shown the "Open New Personal Folder" dialog. Here you can specify a name for the personal folder you are creating, as well as specify criteria for the new personal folder. The criteria that you specify will determine the contents of the personal folder. When you exit the "Open New Personal Folder" dialog, the contents of your new personal folder will then be shown.
  • The "Update" menu item, located within the Personal menu, updates the contents of a personal folder. An update will rescan your system, searching for any new files that have match the personal folder's criteria. The Update menu item will be enabled only if the active window is showing a personal folder.
  • Choose the "Clear" menu item, located within the Personal menu, to clear all of the contents of a personal folder. Clear only removes the items from the personal folder, Clear does not remove the items from the hard disk. The Clear menu item will be enabled only if the active window is showing a personal folder.
  • Choose the "Remove Items" menu item, located within the Personal menu, to remove a selected item from a personal folder. Remove Items only removes the items from the personal folder, Remove Items does not remove the selected items from the hard disk. The Remove Items menu item will be enabled only if the active window is showing a personal folder, and there are items selected in the personal folder.
  • The "Remove Personal Folders" menu item, located within the Personal menu, removes all the personal folders from FileQuest. The items contained within the personal folders are not removed from the hard disk. The user is prompted with a confirmation box before the removal of personal folders actually takes place. Selecting no will cancel the remove operation. If there is more than one user defined for FileQuest, only the personal folders of the current user will be removed.
  • The "Update Personal Folders" menu item, located within the Personal menu, updates all personal folders that have been defined in FileQuest. If there is more than one user defined for FileQuest, only the personal folders of the current user will be updated.

    Tools Menu

  • Choose the "Add Criteria" menu item, located within the Tools menu, to add a new global criteria to FileQuest. A global criteria can be used multiple times to define personal folders and rules. Examples of existing global criteria are "Big Files", "Text Files", "Bitmaps", etc. The Criteria Manager keeps a record of all global criteria added. You can edit and remove global criteria from the criteria manager.
  • Choose "Add Report", located within the Tools menu, to add a report to FileQuest. A report is a pre-defined search that can be run at any time from within FileQuest. Unlike a personal folder, a report does not store items persistently across report runs. A report always researches the hard drive. A report is defined by criteria that you specify.
  • Choose "Add Rule", located within the Tools menu, to automate frequently performed disk operations. A rule can be executed at any time from FileQuest. By default, a rule shows a preview of the actions that it will take. Rules can be setup to perform batch copy, batch move, and batch delete operations. You define the items that a rule will act upon through criteria.
  • Choose "Add User", located within the Tools menu, to add a user to FileQuest. A user can have a password, and the option to add and delete other users. A user can not see any criteria, personal folders, rules, etc that have been added by another user. An administrative user can set the options within FileQuest to prompt for a user name and password at startup, or to always use the same when starting FileQuest.
  • When the "Criteria Manager" menu item is chosen, the Criteria Manager dialog is shown. From this dialog a user can add new global criteria, edit existing global criteria, and delete global criteria. A user can also change the position that a global criterion is shown in the criteria list. Global criteria are criteria for selecting files and folders that can be reused multiple times in personal folders, rules, and reports. The "Criteria Manager" menu item is located within the Tools menu.
  • When the "Reports Manager" menu item is chosen, the Reports Manager dialog is shown. From this dialog a user can add new reports, edit existing reports, and delete reports. A user can also change the order that reports are shown. The "Reports Manager" menu item is located within the Tools menu.
  • When the "Rules Manager" menu item is chosen, the Rules Manager dialog is shown. From this dialog a user can add new rules, edit existing rules, and delete rules. A user can also change the order that rules shown in. The "Rules Manager" menu item is located within the Tools menu.
  • When the "User Manager" menu item is chosen, the User Manager dialog is shown. From this dialog, a user can see what profile he is currently using, edit existing user profiles (with the proper permissions), and delete user profiles (with the proper permissions). A user can also change his or her password from the User Manager. If the user has not been given permission to manage other users, then the "User Profile" menu item is shown instead. Here a user can change his or her username and password. The "User Manager" menu item is located within the Tools menu.
  • All reports that a user has defined are contained within the "Create Reports" popup menu. A report is "created" when the report is chosen from this menu. You can also add a new report to FileQuest from this popup menu. The "Create Report" popup menu is located within the Tools menu.
  • The "Execute Rule" popup menu contains all the rules that have been defined by the current user. To execute a rule, simply choose the rule from this menu. . The "Execute Rule" popup menu is located within the Tools menu.
  • Choosing the "Options" menu item, located within the Tools menu, allows you to configure many FileQuest options. The "Options" menu item brings up the options property pages. The options menu is where all FileQuest configuration information is located.

    Window Menu

  • The "Auto Popup Menu", located in the Windows menu, allows you to specify a view mode for FileQuest. There are three menu options under this sub-menu.
  • Turn off auto tiling.
  • In multiple windows mode, every new folder window is showed tiled vertically in relation to all of the other active folder windows.
  • In multiple windows mode, every new folder window is showed tiled horizontally in relation to all of the other active folder windows.
  • Maximize the currently active folder window.
  • Tile all open folder windows vertically.
  • Tile all open folder windows horizontally.
  • Cascade all open folder windows.
  • Choose the "Select Tree Node" menu item, located within the Windows menu, to synchronize the folder tree with the active folder window.
  • Minimize all open folder windows.
  • Choose this item to close the active window.
  • Choose this item to close all active windows.
  • Group of items, each item contains the name of a folder that is currently open in a window.
  • Choose "Windows List" to see the list of all open windows.

    Help Menu

  • Choose the "Buy FileQuest" popup menu item, located within the Help menu, to buy FileQuest. You can buy FileQuest in one of two ways:

    - Online

  • Use this method to buy FileQuest straight over the Internet.

    - Order Form

    Fill out and send the order form via mail or e-mail. You can pay by check or credit card. Please do not send cash.

  • Once you buy FileQuest, choose the "Unlock FileQuest" menu option to unlock FileQuest. The "Unlock FileQuest" menu option is located within the Help menu. Simply choose the unlock button located on the "Unlock FileQuest" dialog, and enter your unlock code in the "Unlock Code" field.
  • Choose the "Tip Of the Day" menu item, located within the Help Menu, to read a FileQuest tip of the day. Perfect for gaining little tidbits of knowledge about FileQuest.
  • The "Help Guides" menu item, located within the Help Menu, contains all of the reference material for FileQuest. The material is presented in an easy to use HTML format.
  • There are five sub-options to choose from in the "PiQuest on the Web" popup menu item, located within the Help menu. The sub-options are:
  • Use "Report a Bug" to e-mail a bug report to us. A technical support representative will respond within two days concerning your FileQuest problem.
  • Use "Request Information" to request product information from us. Send any question concerning FileQuest or PiQuest that you can think of. You will receive a response to your request within two days.
  • Choosing the "Technical Support" option opens PiQuest Software's technical support web page.
  • Choose "Register FileQuest" to register your FileQuest software. Registering will allow us to keep you updated about current FileQuest software information.

  • Choose the "About Windows" menu item, located within the Help menu, to view information about your windows system. This information is useful for resolving any technical issues that might arise while using FileQuest.
  • The "About FileQuest" menu item, located within the Help menu, shows a dialog containing the version number and copyright information for FileQuest.
