ASCIICAT.HLP Thank you for using this book. If anybody asks you for a copy of this help file, please tell them to visit my home page and get their own, thank you. Besides, they're likely to get a later, better version than the one you have if they go get their own. And while they're at my home page, they'll probably find something very cool that they really can't live without. Web site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/r_harvey This is not free software. You may continue to use this book as long as you like without charge, as long as you agree to pop-in to the home page every now and again to look for new stuff, and maybe even find something you'd like to purchase. That is your fee--you must stop by again. It would be nice if you would send a postcard or letter to suggest additions and say thanks, too. Paper mail is much more appreciated than e-mail. Check the web site for updates and other information and utilities for programmers, writers, and computer users. R. E. Harvey P. O. You can create a shortcut to the help file, and pop it up wherever you need a quick conversion. * This book is frequently updated. Stop by the home page now and again to get the latest edition. Select Help, "About ASCIIcat..." to see the publication date. If it's a few months old, stop by for an updated release. * You can page through the file using >> and << buttons. Look all the way through once to see which pages are most useful to you. * Click the Contents button to switch to the main contents. Click a book in the window to open a category, then select a topic. * While it starts at the Character Converter list (a very popular page), the table of contents is always available. * Using the Contents page is easy: click Contents to jump to it, find a topic and jump to it, then click the Back button to return to the same section on the Contents page. * The [>] icon on the top left corner each page pops-up the Contents box, which you can use to jump to most screens. * The big blue "A" in the upper-left pops-up an ANSI table * Most pages can be read in a narrow window. The Character Conversion table has some columns that are of limited use; you can make the window narrower than the column width without the columns word-wrapping. * Some keys have new functionality when used with our help files: Spacebar Move to next page Backspace Move to previous page Ctrl+PgUp Move to previous page Ctrl+PgDn Move to next page H Open history window C Jump to the Contents page --( Setup )-- ASCIIcat supports Microsoft Windows 3.1, and Windows 95 or later. The software package includes these files: ASCIICAT.CN- Optional table of contents for 32-bit operating systems. ASCIICAT.GIF A nice icon you can use to share ASCIIcat with others. ASCIICAT.HLP The complete book. ASCIICAT.TXT This file. Copy the file named ASCIICAT.HLP to a folder that is easy to find, then create a shortcut to the file. See your operating system documentation for tips about creating shortcuts (sorry, but there are so many different ways!). Start ASCIIcat by clicking on ASCIICAT.HLP or by selecting the shortcut. --( Help File Loader )-- If you sometimes find that you have started several copies of ASCIIcat, you can make sure that only one copy is running by starting it with the free utility program named r_help.exe. r_help.exe checks if ASCIIcat is loaded; if it is, it just switches to it (and restores it to the top if it is minimized). If it isn't loaded, r_help.exe will start ASCIIcat. Visit the r_harvey home page to download your copy of r_help.exe. --( Separate Contents Window )-- Feel free to ignore this section. If you are using Windows 95 or later, you can use a separate table of contents window, if you like. We prefer and recommended using the built-in table of contents, but here are the steps to use the table of contents window: * Close ASCIICAT.HLP. * Find the file ASCIICAT.CN- on the distribution disk or archive. * Copy ASCIICAT.CN- to the same file folder that contains ASCIICAT.HLP. * Rename ASCIICAT.CN- to ASCIICAT.CNT. * Start ASCIICAT.HLP again. You can still use the built-in table of contents: * Open the File menu and select the "Main Contents" item. * Right-click the mouse within the window and select "Main Contents". You can force the help file to start at the built-in contents page, yet still use the Contents button to open the external contents, by changing the shortcut: WINHLP32 -K Contents ASCIICAT.HLP Use this command line to start at the multi-column character table page: WINHLP32 -K ASCII ASCIICAT.HLP If you decide to stop using the external table of contents, follow these steps: * Close ASCIICAT.HLP. * Delete ASCIICAT.GID. The file may be hidden; if you are using Windows Explorer, select View-Options, then make sure "Show all files" is selected. * Delete or rename ASCIICAT.CNT. * Start ASCIICAT.HLP again. If you have trouble deleting ASCIICAT.GID, start ASCIICAT.HLP from this command line: WINHLP32 -G HTMLCAT.HLP --( Link to ASCIIcat )-- Want to offer your guests a free copy of ASCIIcat? It's simple, just place a copy of the picture ASCIICAT.GIF on your Web site (it's very small), and use this link on your pages: Click to get ASCIIcat This is a special download page just for ASCIIcat; it runs politely in a frame. There is a very small mention of the home page. There are no cookies, counters, or scripts. Please do not link to ASCIIcat in any other way--unless you want to link to the main home page. Do not place a copy on your Web server--it would soon be out of date, anyway. (C) 1999 Richard E. Harvey, All rights reserved. Please read the license agreement in the help file. That's pretty fair, considering how much work it takes to do something like this.
