-*-*-*-*-* ALRIGHT THIS IS HOW TO USE THIS COLLECTION *-*-*-*-*-
You must be running Windows 98/95 and have a screen resolution of more than 256 colors, for optimum use the screen refresh rate should be set to true color (24 bit) or higher at 800x600 (this is VERY important). If the resolution is not set to at least high color the icons will appear distorted, 640x480 resolution will work if that is as high a resolution your monitor is capable of but the icons will not be displayed properly.
For Windows 95 users, to properly use these icons and take advantage of their detail and color you will need either MS Plus! or Microsoft Font Smoother which can be obtained for FREE at http://www.microsoft.com/truetype/grayscal/smoother.htm , it is a small file approximately 170kb in size.
Install the font smoother onto your system, if you already have MS Plus! you will not need to do this. The Font Smoother will put a new tab in the Control Panel / Display properties command called Plus!. You can access this either by going to the control panel and clicking on the display icon, or right clicking on your desktop background and selecting properties.
Go to the Display Properties/Plus! tab and select "Use large icons" and "Show icons using all possible colors". At this point you may be prompted to restart your computer, go ahead and do so.
Unless you have specified otherwise the JC3 Icons.exe program has created a new folder, C:\ICONS, to which it has placed the icon collection.
Now, go to the Display Properties and choose the Plus! tab again and select the icon you want to change, then hit the "change icon" button. From here you can change the icons for the desktop items: My Computer, recycle bin empty+full, and Network Neighborhood. You will now need to locate the JC3icons.dll file so go to "Browse" and to C:/ICONS. Now select the JC3icons.dll file and scroll through the contents until you find the icon you want to use.
If you are using Windows 98 you do not need to have Microsoft Plus! or Font Smoother installed, all the necessary software is already on your computer. Also note that the Tweak UI software discussed below should also already be installed.
Go to the Display Properties/Effects tab and select "Use large icons" and "Show icons using all possible colors". At this point you may be prompted to restart your computer(?), go ahead and do so.
Unless you have specified otherwise the JC3 Icons.exe program has created a new folder, C:\ICONS, to which it has placed the icon collection.
Now, go to the Display Properties and choose the Effects tab again and select the icon you want to change, then hit the "change icon" button. From here you can change the icons for the desktop items: My Computer, recycle bin empty+full, My Documents and Network Neighborhood. You will now need to locate the JC3icons.dll file so go to "Browse" and to C:/ICONS. Now select the JC3icons.dll file and scroll through the contents until you find the icon you want to use.
Any Icon for a shortcut can be changed in a similar way. Once you have located the shortcut you would like to change the icon for, right click on the shortcut, go to the properties option and click on it. A dialog box will appear, click on the shortcut tab, then click the change icon button. You will now need to locate the JC3icons.dll file so go to "Browse" and to C:/ICONS. Now select the JC3icons.dll file and scroll through the contents until you find the icon you want to use
You should be able to figure the rest out, have fun.
To remove this collection from your system you need only to delete the C:\Icons folder and its contents. None of the settings on your computer are changed by this file's installation. If you associate any items with an icon in the JC3Icons.dll you will need to reassign a new icon to them or the default document icon will be used for them.
Currently there is only one known problem that may be encountered when using the JC3 Icon collection. Because of the high detail and color of these icons, Windows may sometimes display the wrong icon or the icon may appear 'damaged'. The best way to fix this is to repair the icons using Microsoft Tweak UI. This is FREE software that is distributed by Microsoft and will add some useful extras to your system, it can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/powertoys/w95tweakui/default.asp , it is a small file approximately 64kb in size. (Windows 98 should already have installed Tweak UI on your system so there is no need to re-download it)
Tweak UI will put a new icon in the Control Panel called Tweak UI. Click on this icon and go to the "Repair" tab, click on the "Rebuild Icons" button. This will rebuild the system icons and fix any icons that are not shown correctly. At this point you may need to go back to the Display/Plus! tab (Effects tab in Win98) and check that the desired icons are associated with the appropriate applications.
Please report any new problems to me.
Desk Color. A useful program that you should get if you don't already have something similar is Desk Color. This program will remove the blocks of color from behind you desktop icons and enable you to change the color of the desktop icon text for a nice effect. This program is FREE and is a small download of approximately 105kb in size. I recommend it and it is better than other programs such as Disappear98 which is not free. Desk Color can be downloaded from http://members.tripod.com/~TLGriffith4/DeskColor/
Microsoft Tweak UI. Window 95 users may also want to get Microsoft Tweak UI which is discussed in the previous section because it will get rid of those annoying shortcut arrows on your icons. Windows 98 users should already have it installed, go to your control panel and check it out.
