The first electric telegraph sets were introduced on our territory on the routes built together with construction of steam railway lines in the 40s of 19th century. The first telegraph system to be used was that of Bain modified by the Vinnese electric engineer Eckling (so-called bell telegraph). From the 50s, however, this system was substituted by the system of Morse. Pointer telegraphs (Breuguet) were also rarely used on some railway lines. With gradual rising demand for telegraph services new devices were introduced, e.g. Hughes's printing machines, Baudot's instruments for multiple telegraphy, quick-telegraphy system of Siemens, and others.
