Managing mail in i.Scribe

Index

Disk Usage

All items maintained by i.Scribe are stored in a single file on disk with the extension ".mail". This file is created when you first start i.Scribe with the default folders for mail and contacts.

This file has an internal format similar to your hard disk, in that it has folders and files in a heirarchy. This is mimiced on the screen with a tree view on the left hand side of the main window. This is called the folder view, it looks like this:

The right side is called the item view and looks like this:

In this version of i.Scribe you will have to occassionally compact the mail folders file to remove unused space (in future versions this will be automatic). To do this click File | Compact Folders.

Folders

Each folder (in the folder view) can contain one type of item. Except the trash folder which can contain any type of item (notice how it doesn't have column headings). The type of item a folder can have is assigned when the fodler is created and can't be changed after that. The types of items you can store in folders are either Mail or Contacts. More types may be added in future versions of i.Scribe.

You can create new sub-folders by right clicking on a folder and selecting "Create sub folder". You are then prompted for the name of the new folder and the type of items it will contain.

Folders can be deleted and renamed from commands on the folders right click menu. These actions can't be reversed so be careful.

Depending on what the folder contains the folder may have extra commands attached to the top of the right click menu. For instance the "trash" may be "emptied" and you can create a new mail in a mail type folder.

Items

Items that appear in the item view can be opened with a double click. You can select multiple items by pressing the "Ctrl" key as you select them. Mail items have a Read/UnRead status which can be set manually from the mail's right click menu.

Drag and Drop

To move items from one directoy to another, select the items you want to move and then drag them to the destination directory in the folder view. Only directories of the same type accept the items. The trash accepts all items. By creating subfolders and by using drag and drop you can manage and sort your mail in a logical fashion.
