Windows 95 and Windows 98 There are two versions of ERS98 please read notes first: ******************************************************** Windows 95 and Windows 98 Notes: ***** 1) If you downloaded the 2.64 MB version then read below for additional notes, the 2.64 MB has the VB5run included in the setup. 2) The 710 KB or 780 KB, has the ERS Setup wizard and doesn't include the VB5run. Also new 260 KB update now available, it includes ERS98 files only but doesn't include any of ERS98 DLLs. 3) Before ERS98 will run, you must install the ERS VB5run kit, it is included with the 2.64 MB version, or you can download it at http://www.mslm.com/ersmore.htm 4) If you have a command line in the Autoexec.bat to delete Win95 temporary files in the C:\Windows\Temp upon startup then the VB5run update will not take affect if it prompts you to restart computer because the computer DLLs are outdated. Remove the line from the Autoexec.bat when you are installing programs that requires a reboot. 5) If while installing you get the message "Unable to find Choice.com", this is an important file to have, it should be in the Windows\Command folder. The DLL update is supplied by Microsoft and absolutely safe, it actually makes Win95 the year 2000 ready. Win98 and OSR 2.53(that is OSR2c NOT OSR2b) are already year 2000 ready. End Notes ************ INSTALLATION ------------ ERS does not make any modifications or entries to the W95 Registry, nor to any Win95 System files files. It simply makes new ERS98 directories and copy the necessary ERS files into the appropriate directories, while adding an ERS98 Shortcut to the Start menu. Unzip and place ERS files into a temporary folder, double click Setup.exe, and select the desired drive and path. Then click on the "Install" button. The ERS setup wizard will make one main Ers98 folder, and one other separate folder called "1Ers" in the root directory of your hard drive C:\, where the restoration batch files will get created once you do backups. ERS.bat will be created in the "C:\ "directory once you open and close ERS98.exe or AutErs.exe, it contains information about your backup dates, reminder on the restorations command and your added notes to the backup. If restoring from backup Just type ERS OR ERS.bat at the Command Prompt and it will automatically change directory to the 1ers folder. If non of the files are found. Although it does not overwrite any existing files, ERS Setup Wizard will copy Attrib.exe from the Windows\Command directory, to the root directory of C:\, and the self registering Stkit432.dll, Dzip32.dll, Dzocx32.ocx, Dzstat32.ocx and Oc30.dll to the C:\Windows\System directory. Regwzrd.ocx for the Shareware version. REINSTALL --------- Take care to see that the correct path to the previous installation is shown in the path window. When reinstalling, don't delete the previous {older} Ers98 directory, nor the ERS98.exe. Merely selecting the "Reinstall" command, it will update and replace all files and recreate any missing folders, while keeping your previous {old} backups safely intact. UNINSTALL: --------- WARNING: DO NOT... use any third party software to UNINSTALL any version of ERS. To remove {uninstall} ERS correctly, simply delete the entire Ers98 directory. Delete the shortcut found in C:\Windows\Startmenu\Programs, the AutoErs.lnk in C:\Windows\Startmenu\Programs\Startup delete ERS.bat and the 1ERS folder from the root directory C:\ and delete RestDefd.exe in the Windows directory. There are no ERS registry entries to remove. I suggest you keep the VB5run update file because it will work with other VB 5.0 applications that call for it. But if for some reason you need to remove it, go to the Control Panel\Add Remove Programs and uninstall the ERS VB5run update. Below applies If you downloaded the 2.64 MB version =================================================== INSTALLATION ------------ The only difference is, InstallShield setup wizard used instead of the ERS Setup wizard and the VB5run already included. Read all above for general information about ERS. Extract to temporary directory and double click the Setup.exe. TO REINSTALL: ------------ Read the above Reinstall section and use the ERS Setup Wizard. Download the 770 KB or the 260 KB(No ERS98 DLLs included) version from http://www.mslm.com/ers98.htm which has the Reinstall feature. To use the the 780 KB for reinstall is highly recommended. UNINSTALLING the 2.64 MB version: -------------------------------- To Un-install, go to the Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, scroll down to ERS98 and click uninstall, if for any reason it will not uninstall then delete the Ers98 directory, 1ers folder and the Ers.bat in C also delete the shortcut to the Start Menu, and if you have added Auto backup to startup then delete AutoErs.lnk, you will not get any error messages after you do that. Again don't use third party uninstall software to uninstall any versions of ERS. Windows 98: ---------- If you are installing Windows 98 on top of Windows 95 then and you have ERS98 or ERS32pro installed, before going any further, click Options\Update ERS for Win98. That will replace old Win95 MS-DOS files in the 1Ers folder with the new Win98 MS-DOS files. Then delete all backups made in Win95. If you think that you want to go back to Win95, save couple Win95 backups, be sure to note it. After restoring Win95, click Options\Update ERS for Win98 again to replace Win98 DOS files with Win95 DOS files. If accidently restored from Win95 backup, just re restore from Win98 backup. If you are installing ERS98 on top of Windows 98 then you are ready to go. After Installing ERS98: ---------------------- Once ERS98 program is opened you will be prompted to select shortcuts names. Click the Done button if you are new to ERS. Otherwise read the instructions below. (for advanced users) If later on you decided you want to change your mind and change shortcuts selected, this is what you can do: Either delete every thing and Install all over, that is, ERS98 directory, the 1ers folder, ERS.bat in C and the shortcut to the Startmenu. Or If you have backups that you don't want to loose but like to change the shortcut names then, Delete shortcut in the StartMenu, Delete the ERS.bat in C, Delete Shortcut.dat and Marker.txt in the ERS98\Ersfiles directory, then double click Ers98.exe, select shortcuts names etc when prompted, now copy all restore batch files from the older directory 1Ers to the new folder, (let us say 2Ers) then delete the 1Ers folder. Remember that ERS.bat get recreated every time you close ERS98. Where Win95 is mentioned it applies to Win98 too.
