These sections have information that is essential if you wish to successfully run Soul Reaver on your system. *********************************************************************** TABLE OF CONTENTS I. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS II. INSTALLATION III. DIRECTX 6.1 IV. GRAPHIC CARD SUPPORT V. GRAPHIC CARD DRIVERS VI. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES VII. GENERAL GAME ISSUES VIII. GAME FEATURES IX. MANUAL CORRECTIONS X. CONTACTING EIDOS I. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ----------------------- Required: * P200 MHz MMX Processor (3D accelerator card, DirectX6 compliant) * P266 MHz MMX processor (without 3D accelerator card) * Windows 95/98 * 16MB RAM * 4X CD ROM drive * DirectX 6 or higher required (included) * 100% DirectX 6 compliant Sound Card * 320MB uncompressed hard drive space * Keyboard & mouse Recommended: * P266 MHz processor (with 4MB 3D accelerator card) * 32MB RAM * 8X CD ROM drive * Gamepad or joystick All 100% DirectX 6 compliant 3D accelerator cards supported. It may be necessary to update your hardware drivers. NOTE: * We did not test Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver with laptop systems and therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility. Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible to configure a game that would work with all of them. Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a gaming machine because of memory configurations, their microchannel architecture, port configurations (ie no place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily designed to be used with productivity software. The other common problem is that laptop systems will attempt to compress the traditional version of the standard 101 function keyboard. * Additionally, Soul Reaver is not supported using Windows NT, compressed hard drives, or Windows emulators. Although the game might run, its performance and stability will be questionable. II. INSTALLATION ---------------- Treat your computer to a tune up - follow this procedure before installation: In Accessories\System Tools, you may find utilities that can increase the performance of your system. * Scandisk your hard drive with "ScanDisk" * Defragment your hard drive with "Disk Defragmenter" * Virus Check your Hard Drive with the latest virus definitions * Reclaim hard drive space by deleting unnecessary files with "Disk Cleanup" * Verify that you have at least 150MB of free hard drive space (after game installation) for your swap file. Now you can install and run Soul Reaver on a clean hard drive. Make sure you disable your resident virus checker (check the system tray) during install to avoid installation hang-ups. To install the game, insert the game CD, and click the button labeled "Install Soul Reaver" when the Autorun Menu appears. If the menu does not appear, run autorun.exe, from the root directory of the CD. III. DIRECTX 6.1 ---------------- Soul Reaver makes extensive use of Microsoft's DirectX 6.1. In order for you to play the game, you must have DX6-compliant drivers for your video card and sound card. Please note that although DirectX 6.1 is available for installation with the game, your video and sound card drivers will not be upgraded to DirectX 6.1 drivers. You will need to obtain the latest DX6 drivers from your card manufacturer. If Soul Reaver does not run properly on your video card, and there are no DX6 drivers available for your video card, you will have to run the game in Software Mode. IV. GRAPHIC CARD SUPPORT ------------------------ If your 3D card does not support DX6, and/or does not have at least 4 MB of video RAM, you will most likely have to run the game in Software Mode. SCREEN RESOLUTION If you run the game in 800x600 resolution or higher, and experience texture drop out, slow performance or any other problems, try lowering the screen resolution to 640x480 or 512x384. HOW TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE For the best performance, select the Secondary (3Dfx) or Primary Display Driver: Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration, and the Primary Sound Driver. If you use the Secondary or Primary Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration Driver, 640x480 or higher resolution is recommended (because it looks so sweet!) If you run the game in software, 512x384 is recommended. If you wish to increase the performance even further in software mode, you can turn off the "Filter Textures" setting in the setup window that comes up when you first start the game. The graphic quality will decrease slightly as a result, but you will probably get a higher frame rate. COLOR DEPTH Each graphic resolution can be run at 16 bit or 32 bit color depth. Select the color depth that runs best on your system. Please note that the color depth is attached to the graphic resolution. If you continue to have problems, the EIDOS technical support page is listed in the Internet Links folder on the Start Menu, and can also be reached at: http://www.eidosinteractive.com/help.html The following are known issues with particular 3D graphic chipsets: NVIDIA RIVA 128 *************** The program may freeze when making frequent changes to the Gamma setting within the game. We recommend that you set the Gamma setting to a suitable level and keep that setting. ATI RAGE PRO ************ The Rage Pro does not support modulate alpha, and as a result there may be some problems with the transparencies within the game while running in Direct3D mode, such as: -Solid shadows underneath all characters. -Flashing graphics on the top and bottom of screen during cut scenes. -No transparency on spectral enemies when they are killed and sucked in. However, aside from the transparency issue, the game should perform very well on the RAGE PRO based cards. During the FMV sequences (such as the intro), there may be a black square caused by the cursor, on certain graphic cards. If this happens, please move the cursor off of the screen with the mouse. V. GRAPHIC CARD DRIVERS ----------------------- It is imperative that you keep your 3D graphic card (and sound card) drivers updated with the latest drivers available. Please visit your card manufacturer's web site to check if there are new DX6 drivers for your card on a monthly basis. You can also check the chip manufacturer's web site for reference driver updates. EIDOS Interactive maintains a web page with links to all major video and audio card manufacturers, which is a good first stop if you're looking to upgrade your drivers. You can reach this page through our technical support web site: http://www.eidosinteractive.com/help.html For your convenience we have listed the web sites below, at which drivers can be found: 3Dfx (Voodoo, Voodoo Rush, Voodoo 2, Banshee, Voodoo3) http://www.3dfx.com/ NVIDIA (RIVA 128, 128 ZX, RIVA TNT) http://www.nvidia.com/ Matrox (Millennium, Millennium II, G100, G200, G400) http://www.matrox.com/ Rendition (V1000, V2100 and V2200) http://www.rendition.com/ ATI (Rage II, Rage Pro, Rage 128, Rage Fury) http://www.atitech.com/ S3 (Virge GX/DX/VX, Virge GX2, Savage 3D, Savage 4) http://www.s3.com/ NEC PowerVR (PCX1, PCX2, Series2) http://www.powervr.com/ Intel (i740) http://support.intel.com/support/swd/graphics.htm Real 3D (i740) http://www.real3d.com/ Trident (Blade 3D, Image 975) http://www.tridentmicro.com/ Diamond Multimedia http://www.diamondmm.com/ Canopus http://www.canopuscorp.com/ Hercules http://www.hercules.com/ Creative Labs http://www.soundblaster.com/ Quantum 3D http://www.quantum3d.com/ VI. GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ---------------------------- GAME CD ------- Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver requires the game CD to be in the CD Drive at all times during play. USE OF ALT-TAB, CTRL-ESC, EMAIL NOTIFICATION --------------------------------------------- Any switching between Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver and other programs running on your PC is discouraged. You should run the game without any other programs running on your PC. If you switch between programs, Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver may become unstable - if this happens, reboot your PC and run the game again. COMPATIBILITY ------------- Soul Reaver was run through our compatibility labs. However, due to the myriad PC specifications in the consumer market, we cannot guarantee full compatibility with your system. Some tips to improve compatibility: 1. Update your video and soundcards with the latest drivers available. Contact your hardware manufacturer for the most recent drivers. (Using Beta listed drivers is not recommended) 2. Verify that your system is not running in compatibility mode. Click on the START MENU, then click on the SETTINGS option, then click on the CONTROL PANEL. Once there select the SYSTEM settings. Then select the PERFORMANCE tab. In the list, both File System and Virtual Memory should read 32 bit. If not, there is a driver or system conflict that you need to address. In this same dialog box, click the DEVICE MANAGER tab. In Device Manager, any hardware device with a red "X" or yellow "!" is causing the problem. 3. During installation and operation of the game, we recommend that you disable any virus checker, screen saver program or any on-line chat programs such as ICQ or E-Mail. 4. Do not play on a system that is below minimum specification. 5. DO NOT overclock your CPU or video card. 6. Verify you have 150MB of free hard drive space after installation of the game. GAMEPAD/CONTROLLER PROBLEMS --------------------------- If you are having problems with your gamepad or joystick, and your gamepad is connected through your sound card, you must make sure that you have the very latest drivers installed for your sound card. GAMEPADS AND CONTROLLERS WITH LESS THAN 10 BUTTONS You will not be able to fully configure a gamepad or controller with less than 10 buttons to play Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver. We suggest either using the keyboard or assigning the camera controls to the keyboard. KEYBOARD PROBLEMS ----------------- NOTE: Not all keys (eg. the top row of number keys) are available when you play Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver with the keyboard and you re-configure the keyboard. VIDEO PROBLEMS -------------- PROBLEM I see and hear a slight stutter when movies are played. SOLUTION This is a limitation of the movie player used in the game. This problem is more pronounced on slower CD-ROM drives (less than 16x). PROBLEM There is a small black box on the screen during the FMV's. SOLUTION This appears on certain graphic cards, and is caused by the cursor. Move the mouse until the black box is off of the screen. PROBLEM The videos (movies) stutter when they play, the CD spins up for a long time, or the game installation takes a very long time. SOLUTION Certain CD-ROM models (usually IDE 32X or 40X) have lower seek and data transfer rates when transferring data. This is usually a limitation of the CD-ROM drive. You can also verify that the CD-ROM has enough Windows cache (at least 1MB), your are using the latest drivers or correct CD Drivers for your make and model, and that you are not running the CD-ROM in compatibility mode. Also, enable DMA support (if available) for the CD-ROM in Device Manager. Finally, make sure you have the CD-ROM connected directly to the second IDE controller on your motherboard and not as a slave with your CD-ROM drive. PROBLEM The introduction movie does not play or plays with no sound. SOLUTION We used a system called EscapePlay to run the introduction movie. EscapePlay examines the specifications of the machine and decides the best way to play the movie. If it determines that the system will not play the movie successfully, it will not play it at all. In certain circumstances it opts to play the opening sequence without sound; this is a decision it makes based on the makeup of the machine. You may by-pass the movie by pressing the "ESC" key. PROBLEM I have a 3D accelerator and when I play the game, the system locks up or the graphics are corrupted. What is the problem? SOLUTION This problem is usually caused by invalid or out of date drivers. Visit the 3D-card manufacturer's web site or contact the card manufacturer, download and install the latest DirectX 6.1 compatible drivers. Make SURE your card supports DirectX 6.1. If your card does not support DirectX 6.1, you will need to run the game in Software Mode. If your card only has 2MB of VRAM, you may also have to run in Software Mode. Check that your Windows desktop is set at 16-bit color. Then disable any tweaks you may have used to accelerate your video card (if you overclock your card, it may become unstable). SOUND PROBLEMS -------------- If you are experiencing any sound problems, make sure to select the Primary Sound Driver in the setup window that appears, when the game is run. PROBLEM Why do I hear static or popping during the game? SOLUTION Several things may cause this problem. You may simply have the volume set too high. Double click on the speaker icon on your desktop and move the slider of the "Wave" and "Midi" volume to the half way point. There may also be a DMA conflict with your sound card and another device on your computer. To check this click on Start>Settings>Control panel>System. When System Properties is displayed click on the Device Manager tab; if you see any '!' or red 'X's you have a conflict. Please use the Windows Hardware Conflict Wizard to resolve the problem. If you cannot resolve the problem or you are unsure how to fix this problem, you will need to contact your computer manufacturer. Another possible cause for popping, static, or even no sound is that your sound card does not fully support DirectX 6.1. Soul Reaver requires a sound card that fully supports DirectX 6.1 or later. You will need to contact your computer or sound card manufacturer for assistance in acquiring and installing new drivers. Note: There are some sound cards that do not have drivers that are compatible with DirectX 6.1 at this time. If that is the case please use the other suggestions provided to diminish the problems with static or popping noises. VII. GENERAL GAME ISSUES ------------------------ At the MAIN TITLE SCREEN, press ENTER (Press Start) to continue to the next menu screen. If you wish to EXIT the game back to Windows, select QUIT GAME. CLOCK PUZZLE - If you are running in software, and are getting a low frame rate, you may have trouble getting the clock puzzle to trigger properly. Please set the video resolution to a lower setting (to increase frame rate) and the clock puzzle will now trigger correctly. SAVING THE GAME --------------- Many users have been confused by the save routine that Soul Reaver uses. When they reload a saved game, Raziel will always start in the Underworld. This is by design. On your travels through Nosgoth you will find strat- egically placed teleports. Use these to return to the area where you last saved. You will find that all of the puzzles that you had solved and abilities you have aquired are as you left them. VIII.
