The are three ways (that I found) to get past.

Hint 3 of 7:

1) Use the turtle food to get a turtle ride around him. (safe method)

Hint 4 of 7:

2) Use a left-over spear of shamap to stun him, then scurry by.

Hint 5 of 7:

3a) Lure him south with the Avatar, and use battle frenzy.

Hint 6 of 7:

3b) Sneak everyone by except the Avatar.

Hint 7 of 7:

3c) Work the heavily armored Avatar around, healing often.
