How can I avoid the third pirate?

Ice doesn't melt in this game for some reason.

If you used the ice to stop the first guard, just position yourself between
the ice and the guard.  This one will trip just like the first.

If not, I've heard that there's an alternate solution, although I've never
quite been able to get it to work myself.
