Clash in the Desert May 28th, 1939 In May of 1939, Russia and Japan entered into a border dispute about Outer Mongolia and Manchuria. While the land was of little value to either side, the issue of control finally led to open conlict. On May 28th, units of the Japanese 23rd Division crossed the border and into Russian territory. The Japanese had unwisely left their flanks weakened and the Russians were quick to take advantage. As the Japanese column trudge down the road, they were suprised to hear the sound of tanks heading their way.
