Symantec Internet FastFind - Version 1.0a Trial Edition Release Notes Copyright (c) 1996 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved. Please read this document carefully; it contains important information about Internet FastFind. About This 30-day Trial Edition ------------------------------- This is a special Trial Edition of Internet FastFind. It will cease to function 30 days after it is installed, although Uninstall will still work. For additional information regarding Internet FastFind, including product reviews and online purchase instructions, please visit our website at http://www.symantec.com/iff/ Connecting to the Internet -------------------------- Before you can use Symantec Internet FastFind, you must have: 1) A connection to the Internet. You can connect through Ethernet to an Internet server on a network to which you are attached, or you can use a dialup PPP or SLIP account from an Internet provider and connect by modem to the Internet provider's server. For more information about connecting to the Internet check the Symantec Internet FastFind help. 2) A 32-bit version of Microsoft WINSOCK. WINSOCK is a TCP/IP stack that Windows uses to communicate with the Internet. If you are using the version of WINSOCK supplied by Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, you are using a 32-bit WINSOCK.DLL. Ask your Internet service provider if you are unsure. Symantec Internet FastFind does not work with 16-bit WINSOCK DLLs. Trumpet Winsock is a combined 16 bit/Windows 95 release, not a full 32-bit version, and therefore is not supported by this release. Using Auto-dial with Internet FastFind -------------------------------------- Auto-dial support for Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 is available if you have installed Microsoft Plus!, Microsoft Internet Jumpstart Kit, or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Internet FastFind will use Auto-dial if it is installed and configured on your system. Check the Windows Help under "Automating Internet Connections". Using a proxy server with Internet FastFind ------------------------------------------- Although some Internet FastFind components work with a proxy server, Internet access through a proxy server is not officially supported in this release. Using Internet FastFind with America Online, Compuserve, WOW! or NETCOM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you can use the Windows 95 or Windows NT standalone versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, then you will be able to use Internet FastFind. America Online - Internet FastFind (and all 32-bit WINSOCK software) requires the 32-bit version of America Online for Windows 95. CompuServe and NETCOM - You must access these services using Microsoft Dial-Up networking. If you need help setting this up, contact Compuserve or NETCON for help. There is also information available in Internet FastFind help. WOW! - WOW! uses a proprietary interface that does not support the use of 32-bit WINSOCK applications, such as Internet FastFind. LiveUpdate ---------- LiveUpdate is not available in this Trial Edition of Internet FastFind. Uninstall --------- To uninstall Internet FastFind, open the Windows 95 or Windows NT Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs and select Internet FastFind. This is the new preferred interface for uninstalling. WebFind ------- To get the most from your Web searches, click the Tips button in WebFind. If you are running OSR2 or RPAWINET, see the RPAWINET section for more information. NetFileFind ----------- Files sizes may be reported incorrectly. These dates and sizes are reported exactly as they appear on the queried server. EasyFTP ------- Passive Mode and ASCII transfer mode can be set in an FTP site's properties. Notify ------ If you are running OSR2 or RPAWINET, see the RPAWINET section for more information. Notify cannot monitor web pages that are dynamically created each time you access them, or pages that require a password to access them. Some of the Web pages you try to monitor may contain separate windows known as frames. Microsoft, for example, uses frames in its Smallbiz page. In a frame-based page, the content of each frame is stored in a separate HTML document that has its own URL (Web address). Because each frame has its own address, you must set up a separate Notify item for each frame you wish to monitor. To create a Notify item for a frame: 1) In your Web browser, right-click inside the frame you want to monitor. (Make sure you don't click on a link or other active area.) 2) From the popup menu, choose Internet Shortcut (Netscape Navigator) or Create Shortcut (Internet Explorer). The browser creates a file containing the frame's URL and places it on your desktop. 3) Drag the file's icon into Notify's main window. A Notify item is created for the frame. 4) Select the new Notify item and click the right mouse button to configure its properties. WebLaunch --------- You can configure which browser WebLaunch will use by right-clicking on the icon available on your Windows 95 taskbar. On the menu that appears you can choose which browser's list of favorites or bookmarks are available and whether or not to use the default browser to launch these items. RPAWINET -------- RPAWINET is CompuServe's Remote Passphrase Authentication (RPA) service for Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and above. This service is provided with Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 or may be downloaded from CompuServe. RPA does not fully support multithreading that Internet FastFind employs. For best performance of Internet FastFind, it is recommended that the use of RPA be disabled. RPA for Internet Explorer is used to allow you to access CompuServe subscriber services from the Internet using Internet Explorer. If you use Netscape as your browser, or use CompuServe by dialing into its access number, or you do not subscribe to CompuServe, RPA can safely be disabled. For more information about Remote Passphrase Authentication, browse to http://www.compuserve.com/rpa/rpa0.htm.
