To send large messages

Many mail and news servers limit the size of messages that can be received and sent. Usually this limit is 1 megabyte per message, including all attached files.

Encoding enables you to send large messages or files to mail servers that limit the size of messages they can receive. When you encode a large message, it is compressed and divided into several smaller messages, and then sent. When the group of messages is received, the mail program recombines and decodes them.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts, and then click either the Mail or News tab.

  2. Click Properties.

  3. On the Advanced tab, select the following check box: Break apart messages larger than x KB, and then enter the maximum file size you can send.
