To obtain a digital ID

You obtain a digital ID from a third-party company called a certifying authority. You can use the same digital ID for signing outgoing messages and to give to others so they can send encrypted messages to you. Or you can use separate digital IDs for each.

At a certifying authorityÆs Web site, you have two options:

• Obtain a digital ID for yourself.

or

• Search through their database to find someone else's digital ID.
