Turn AGC on for the Sound Blaster 16 sound card. -------------------------------------------------- If you have a Sound Blaster 16 sound card, particularly if you are running Windows NT, you will get better sound if you make sure that the AGC (Auto Gain Control) box is checked as follows: - Right click the Volume (speaker) icon in the system tray located at the right of the Taskbar, then click Volume Controls. - Click Options and then click Properties. Select Recording, make sure the Microphone volume control box is checked, and click OK to display the Recording Control panel. - Click Options and make sure Advanced Controls is checked. Then click Advanced in the Microphone column of the Recording Control panel, check the AGC or Auto Gain Control box, and close the Advanced Controls for Microphone panel. B. Disk space requirements for dictating and saving. ---------------------------------------------------- Make sure you have enough disk space before beginning dictation or saving a session. Dictation requires a minimum of 0.4 Megabytes of disk space per minute of dictation. C. ThinkPad: Stop dictation before you suspend. ----------------------------------------------- On IBM ThinkPad computers, stop dictation before you select Suspend mode. D. Windows NT limitations. -------------------------- - You must have administrator privileges to install on Windows NT. - If you run IBM Anti-Virus for Windows NT, make sure you use release 3.0 or later. Earlier releases conflict with ViaVoice Gold Runtime installation. E. Reinstalling the ViaVoice Gold Runtime. ------------------------------------------ If you uninstall the ViaVoice Gold Runtime and then reinstall it, be sure to specify the same directory where the ViaVoice Gold Runtime was installed previously. That way, you will not lose any user data or enrollments from the previous installation. In particular, if the previous ViaVoice Gold Runtime installation was on top of Simply Speaking or Simply Speaking Gold, it was probably installed in "C:\IBMVType". However, when you reinstall the ViaVoice Gold Runtime, the default directory will be "C:\ViaVoice", so you must change it to "C:\IBMVType". F. Uninstalling the ViaVoice Gold Runtime requires a shutdown of the system. --------------------------------------------------------------- After uninstalling the ViaVoice Gold Runtime, you will be required to shut down Windows. Therefore, you should save the data from the programs you are currently running before uninstalling the ViaVoice Gold Runtime. G. Install audio compression drivers for playback. ------------------------------------------------- ViaVoice will not be able to play back your dictated words if certain audio compression drivers are missing from your Windows installation. These drivers are always installed in a typical Windows installation. To check if you have these drivers, do the following: 1. Open the Control Panel folder by clicking Start/Settings/Control Panel and then double click Multimedia to start it. 2. Click the "Advanced" tab and then click the "+" next to Audio Compression Codecs to expand the list of codecs. 3. Check to see if there is a Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC in the list. 4. If there is: - Click the Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC to highlight it. - Click Properties. - Make sure that the Driver is enabled by selecting the "Use this audio codec" button. - Click OK, and OK to close Multimedia. - You are done. Playback should now work. 5. If the list of codecs does not include the Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC: - Double click Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel folder. - Click the "Windows Setup" tab, click "Multimedia" to highlight it and then click "Details..." - If the check box next to Audio Compression does not have a check mark, click it to put a check mark in it, then click OK and follow instructions to install the drivers from your Windows CD-ROM. You are done. ViaVoice playback should now work. - If the Audio Compression check box already has a check mark: - Remove the checkmark and click OK, then Apply, then OK to close Add/Remove Programs. - Go back to the beginning of step 5 and repeat it to install the audio codecs correctly. H. Problems with IBM Anti-Virus and the ViaVoice Gold Runtime. -------------------------------------------------------------- The ViaVoice Gold Runtime has problems installing and running if IBM Anti-Virus is running with the "Check files when accessed" feature enabled in System Shield setup. This can cause errors such as SMAPI RC = 215, SMAPI = -4 in Microphone Setup Wizard or errors using ViaVoice Gold options. The Thinkpad 770 specifically comes with this feature automatically enabled. To eliminate these problems, single right mouse click on the IBM Anti-Virus, click on Configure System Shield, then disable "Check files when accessed" by removing the check mark in that box. I. Installing the ViaVoice Gold Runtime in multiple languages. -------------------------------------------------------------- If you are installing the ViaVoice Gold Runtime in multiple languages, you should restart your system between installations. Otherwise, DLLs that support ViaVoice Outloud (text-to-speech) cannot be registered correctly. J. Windows NT Restriction on network-based 'Start' Folders. ---------------------------------------------------------- Due to the dynamic nature of network-based 'Start' Folders (Start Button), the VoiceCenter is unable to support these types of desktop folders. VoiceCenter must have local access to the Start button in order for it to function correctly. This restriction is only for Windows NT systems using a policy-based Start button on a Windows NT Server. K. Additional instructions for uninstalling the ViaVoice Gold Runtime --------------------------------------------------------- To completely uninstall all of the ViaVoice Gold Runtime to return to the previous version (ViaVoice), complete the following steps: 1. Select Uninstall from either the ViaVoice folder or from the Add/Remove programs in the control panel 2. The uninstall will guide you through the process and ask you to reboot your system. Please reboot when asked to. 3. You must manually delete the remaining files in /viavoice/bin. Do not delete any other files manually. 4. You may now reinstall the previous version (IBM ViaVoice).
