McCafee' s VirusScan, claimed to be the first choice of 16,000
corporate clients, is a comprehensive and effective virus detection
and removal system that may be the most advanced and well-distributed
on the market. The impressive feature set and intuitive interface
make the program easy to use. VirusScan runs in the background,
but can provide on-demand detection and removal of known and unknown
viruses during file access, create, copy, rename, run, disk access,
system startup, and system shutdown. Sporting a new and more attractive
interface, it detects a multitude of virus types in files,
diskettes, and drives, that include boot, file, mutating, macro, stealth,
and encrypted viruses, and has the ability to remove far more viruses
than preceding versions. The user can select basic or advanced scanning
options, and choose automated responses at virus detection that unclude
notification, logging, deletion, isolation, or cleaning.
One feature in particular could make McAfee VirusScan the pinnacle
of virus scanners. VirusScan has the ability to be updated continuously
to accommodate new viruses, which are discovered at a rate of more than
200 a month. These new viruses are not detected using older data files.
McAfee continually updates the files VirusScan uses to detect viruses and
notifies owners when they need to update the virus definition database.
McAfee's impressive new Hunter scanning technology dramatically improves
scanning performance. Its 32-bit, multi-threaded implementation is designed
to utilize the latest advances in memory and I/O management. VirusScan 3.0
is claimed to offer some of the highest scanning and removal rates in the industry.
Tails Up:
Advanced virus-scanning engine; user-friendly; works concurrently in
background; updatable to accommodate new viruses.
Tails Down:
Doesn't offer heuristic virus detection of competitor. Significance of
heuristic viruses unproven.
