	Your user ID file is important because it allows you to use mail, access databases, and create and edit documents. If you delete, lose, or corrupt this file and don't have a backup copy, there's no way to recreate your user ID. Instead, your administrator has to recertify you, which gives you an entirely new user ID. You cannot use your new ID to access data encrypted with your old ID. i
	The local copy of your NAMES.NSF file contains all of your cross-certificates and locations. Keeping a backup copy helps ensure that you can easily access databases you need.
	The NOTES.INI file is a settings file that contains Notes startup information, such as your default data directory and domain name. Notes checks this file every time you use the software and makes appropriate changes when necessary.  
	The DESKTOP.DSK file contains information about the databases and the tab names on your workspace. If something happens to your workspace, use the backup copy of DESKTOP.DSK to recreate your workspace. When you make changes to your workspace by adding and deleting databases or renaming tabs, remember to back up the DESKTOP.DSK file again, so that it includes the most recent changes.l

	The Lotus Notes document database is a robust object storage facility through which users can access, track, store, and organize a wealth of information. Documents can contain any number of objects and data types, including text, rich text, numerical text, structured data, images, graphics, sound, and motion picture images. A database also contains forms for entering information into the documents, views for accessing the information, and rich application-development tools to automate processes related to the application. Integration between Notes databases and traditional databases dramatically enhances the value of an organization's information assets.

	There are six Domino server license types and four client license types.

	The Lotus Domino Mail server lets you run messaging for your organization with Domino. The Lotus Domino server includes the full messaging functionality of the Domino Mail server and adds application development capabilities.
	You must acquire one copy of the Software for each server on which the software will be installed. A server is defined as a central processing unit (CPU), or group of CPUs, that accesses its or their own individual non-cache Random Access Memory (RAM).
	The Domino Server for Single Processor may only be used on a server with one CPU.   The Lotus Domino Mail Server for Single Processor license entitles you to host only those predefined templates which are installed with the Domino Mail Server (including chat, discussion, calendaring and scheduling, and messaging applications).  The Lotus Domino Server for Single Processor entitles you to host all applications included with the Domino Server, as well as any custom or third-party  applications which are available to you. The Domino Server for Multi-Processor may be used on any server. You may use the client features of the Lotus Domino Server to perform installation and administrative tasks; if you want to customize or create applications you must acquire a copy of the Lotus Notes Client software.
	If you wish to use a Domino Server product on a server with multiple CPUs, you must purchase the Domino Server for Single Processor and Domino SMP Services.  You must first acquire a copy of either Domino Server or Domino Mail Server in order to run Domino SMP Services.
	You can use the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license with either a single processor or a multiprocessor computer. With the Lotus Domino Advanced Services license, you gain three primary server enhancements: clustering, the ability to connect several servers together to provide maximum accessibility and synchronization; partitioned servers, enabling one computer to host up to six servers; and billing, capabilities for tracking and storing information about system usage. You must first acquire a copy of the Domino server for Single Processor, the Domino server for MultiProcessor, the Domino Mail server for Single Processor, or Domino Mail server for MultiProcessor to run Domino Advanced Services. You must acquire a Domino Advanced Services license for each server on which you wish to run the software.

	You must acquire one copy of the software for each unique Notes User ID that is issued The software may also be installed on a home and/or laptop computer, but only the authorized user may access the software. You may create user IDs only for the specific Lotus Notes Client version (e.g., Notes Desktopt
	 Client) purchased. You are not required to acquire additional copies of the software when you create Lotus Notes IDs for scheduling applications such as Lotus Organizer.
	For the Lotus Notes Designer for Domino license, you must acquire one copy of the software for each application developer.  In addition to using the software to design, develop and test your software application products, you may also use the software as your Lotus Notes client.  The software also gives you the right to use Lotus Bean Machine (according to the terms set forth above under Domino server license types) and Lotus Notes Global Designer.
	The Lotus Domino Mail Access license allows customers using non-Notes mail clients to access Domino 4.6 servers for mail. You must first acquire a copy of either Domino Server or Domino Mail Server in order to use Domino Mail Access. You must pay an access fee for each user who accesses a unique mail file on your server. You are not required to pay an access fee for (i) users who access the mail file with a Lotus e-mail client, or (ii) users who access non-mail databases or the replica of an already paid for mail file. The purchase of any Notes client includes the Domino Mail Access license.
	The Notes client licenses differ from each other in one or both of the following ways:
	The types of databases and database templates to which you have access.a
	The extent to which you may modify the design of a database and perform administrative tasks.t
	 databasee
	 is a collection of data. Many of the databases that come with Notes are documentation databases; that is, databases that contain information on using Notes. 
	 database template
	 is a skeleton database design that doesn't contain any data. You create a database by copying the database template and then adding data to the copy. For example, you can copy the Discussion database template and then add to the copy the information you want to discuss -- for example, brainstorming ideas for a new product.
	Design features 
	are features that let you modify the design of a database. For example, the design features let you change the appearance and structure of all the documents in a database. 
	Administration features
	 are features that allow you to perform administrative tasks such as registering new Notes users.
	All license types have access to the Lotus Business Partner Catalog
	database, the most complete source of information on Business Partner products and services worldwide. This database can help you identify products and services that will maximize your Lotus technology investments. 
	The following sections describe the three Notes client licenses. For more information, see your Lotus Software Agreement._
Lotus Notes Mail licenses
	With a Lotus Notes Mail license, you have access to the following types of databases:
	A client/server mail database, which stores your mail. Domino creates this database for you automatically from the mail database template.
	Communication and collaboration databases, which help you work with others in your workgroup. You create these databases using the communications and collaboration database templates.
	Documentation databases, which are online books provided for your information. 
	Lotus Notes Mail does not include any design or administration features. For more information on available database templates, see Appendix G of o

Lotus Notes Desktop licenses
	The Lotus Notes Desktop license provides unrestricted access to all Notes databases and database templates, including any custom or third-party databases and templates that are available to you.

	The Notes MAPI Service Providers allow you to use Microsoft Office applications to address, send, and receive mail using both Notes and Microsoft Exchange clients. In addition, the Notes MAPI Service Providers let you use a Microsoft Exchange server to address, send, store, and receive mail; this configuration uses the Notes Public Address Book to address mail and work with your Notes mail file in Microsoft Exchange. 
	You must do the following before using the Notes MAPI Service Providers:

	A portfolio is a collection of databases that you use frequently or that are related. When you install and set up Notes, Notes creates a Favorites portfolio (FAVORITE.NSF) containing your mail database, the Calendar and To Do views of your mail database, and your Personal Journal database. If you have the Personal Web Navigator, Notes also adds a Web Navigator database. You can add and remove databases from your portfolio by opening the portfolio, clicking the portfolio name bar, and clicking Add Database or selecting a database and clicking Remove Database. When you open a portfolio, the navigation pane contains buttons for each database in the portfolio. The portfolio automatically opens the first database in the list.

	Using the Notes Install program for UNIX, you can install Notes on multiple hosts at a time. The Install program automatically installs the appropriate software for the operating system of each destination host. For example, to install Notes on IBM AIX and HP-UX workstations, you can run the Install program once. The Install program installs the Notes workstation software for AIX on the AIX host(s) and the Notes workstation software for HP-UX on the HP-UX host(s). 
	To integrate your environment with the Internet, the Notes workstation Install program installs components for the Notes Web Navigator. However, you must complete additional configuration steps before you can use the Web Navigator. For the configuration steps and more information about Internet integration, see Notes Help.
Configuration settings
	When you install Notes on multiple hosts, Notes uses the same configuration settings for each destination host. The settings include the following:
	The destination path of the Notes files. 
	By default, Notes installs the software to the /opt/lotus/ destination. If you install to a different directory, the Install program creates a symbolic link from /opt/lotus/ to the install directory that you specify. The final directory name of the path must be "lotus"; if you do not include it in the path, the Install program adds "lotus" to the path. q
	The Install program will also install support for VIM applications in the form of a symbolic link in the directory /opt/vim/lib. If this directory does not exist, Notes creates it.
	Documentation.
	 To install additional documentation, do so during the Notes Setup program. By default, Notes installs only the Release Notes and Help Lite databases. 
	The names of the existing UNIX user and group IDs for the Notes workstation.  
	Notes uses the user and group IDs that you specify during install for the user and group ownership of the Notes workstation files. By default, Notes uses "notes" as the user ID, and "notes" as the group ID. You should create these IDs and use the same IDs during the Install program and the workstation Setup program. Make sure the IDs you specify are not the same as any system IDs defined by any of the destination hosts.d

	The Notes workstation Install program has four main tasks. It copies and decompresses the Notes program and data files into specified directories, updates the operating system configuration file (WIN.INI), creates the default Notes configuration file (NOTES.INI), and updates the Windows Registry information in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. 
	To integrate your Notes environment with the Internet, the Notes workstation Install program installs components for the Notes Web Navigator. However, you must complete additional configuration steps before you can use the Web Navigator. For the configuration steps and more information about Internet integration, see Notes Help.
Install methodsf
	The Install program offers the following workstation install methods: 
	Standard Install
	 installs the components needed to run the Notes workstation program for Windows. If you choose this option, Notes installs the program data files, personal data files, Notes Help Lite, and database templates. 
	Notes Designer for Domino
	 installs the components needed to run the Notes Designer for Domino workstation program for Windows. If you have purchased a Notes Designer for Domino license and choose this option, Notes installs the components needed to design, create, and administer applications.
	Customize features - Manual install
	lets you select which components you want to install. You must select this option if you want to install full online Help, the documentation databases, or additional templates on your workstation. If you do not install these databases, you can still access them by adding the databases to your workspace from a Domino server.

	After you complete the workstation Install program, the first time you double-click the Notes icon the Notes workstation Setup program starts automatically. You must complete the Notes Setup program before working in Notes. If you exit the Setup program before it completes, it will restart the next time you start Notes.
	If you are connected to a network and specify a home server during the Setup program, Notes connects your workstation to the home server and adds your mail file icon and the Public Address Book icon to your workspace. Notes creates your Personal Address Book on the local hard drive and adds the icon for it to your workspace. Notes also creates a portfolio called Favorites containing your mail file, the Calendar and To Do views of your mail file, your Personal Address Book, your Personal Journal, and your Personal Web Navigator database. You may have other icons on your workspace, depending on how your administrator customized the installation.

	Follow these steps before you install Notes on your workstation.
	  1.	Make sure that the required hardware, software, and network components are in place and working.a
	  2.	Check with your administrator to make sure you have been registered as a user, the Domino server program is running on the server machine, and you have an active connection to the server.
	  3.	Close any open applications. Leaving applications open could prevent the Install program from copying files or updating shared files.
	  4.	Temporarily disable screen savers and turn off virus-detection software. 
	  5.	Read the Notes Release Notes (READMEC.NSF) for any last-minute changes to the software.
	  6.	If you are upgrading to a new release of Notes:

	Make a backup copy of any Notes data files that you have customized. These files, which are located in the Notes data directory, include template (.NTF), modem (.MDM), script (.SCR), bitmap (.BMP), macro (.MAC), and SmartIcons
 (.SMI and .TBL) files. Otherwise, Notes writes over these data files during installation. 
	Make a backup copy of each of the following files: NOTES.INI (located in the Windows directory), and your DESKTOP.DSK, NAMES.NSF, and user ID files (located in the Notes data directory). Be sure to use a new file name for each backup copy.

	Before you begin the Setup program, get the following information from your administrator. The administrator can get this information from the home server, which is the server that stores the Public Address Book containing your user information. 
	The exact spelling of your home server namen
	. Your home server is the server that stores the Public Address Book for your domain and your Notes mail database. Your home server provides you with a list of servers you can access to add databases to your workspace.
	The exact spelling of your user name as it appears on your user ID and 
	the password for the user ID
	. Your user ID is a unique file that identifies you and provides you with access to mail and other Domino servers. Before you can set up your workstation, you must have your user ID and the password that the administrator specified when you were registered as a user.
	The exact location of your u
	ser ID.
	 Your user ID is either in the Public Address Book on your home server or in a file on a disk. If your user ID is in the Public Address Book, the ID is copied automatically during the setup procedure. If it is on a disk, get the disk from your administrator.
	The type of network connection and network protocol. 
	This information determines how your workstation connects to Domino servers. For example, you can have a network connection, remote connection (via modem), network and modem connections, or no connection. If you are setting up your workstation to have a network connection to servers, you need to know which protocol your workstation uses to connect to your home server. If you are setting up your workstation to dial into a server from a remote location, you also need to know your modem type and the phone number for your home server.
	Internet maila
	If you use Internet mail, get the following information from your administrator:
	The exact name of your outgoing (SMTP) mail server.o
	 This server routes mail that you send to other users in your organization or on the Internet. e
	The exact name of your incoming (POP3) mail server. 
	 This server delivers mail sent by other users to your workstation.r
	The e-mail address to which your mail should be forwarded.
	 Generally, this is your current e-mail address.
	The user name for your mail account.
	The password for your mail account.

	  6.	Make sure that the system running the Install program has root equivalent access on each remote target host using /.rhosts, /etc/hosts.equiv or some other appropriate method.
	  7.	Make sure that there is no extraneous text from remote shells. For example, rsh host echo hello should return only "hello."
	  8.	Make sure that your terminal or window column and row size is at least 80x24.

	Using Single password logonr
	After installing Single password logon on a Windows NT workstation, you are prompted to synchronize your Notes password with your Windows NT password when you start Notes.    
	  1.	Choose File - Tools - User ID.
	  2.	Click Set Password.
	  3.	Type a password of 1 to a maximum of 14 characters, and then click OK. 
	Note
	 14 characters is the maximum length for a Windows NT password. 
	  4.	Retype the password, click OK.h
	  5.	Click OK to log off and back into your Windows NT account. If Notes cannot set the Windows NT password, you will be prompted to synchronize your Windows NT password manually.n
	Disabling Single password logon 
	To disable Single password logon, you must disable the service in the Windows NT Services dialog box.
	  1.	Choose Start - Settings - Control Panel from the Desktop Bar.
	  2.	Double-click the Services icon.
	  3.	Select Lotus Notes Single Logon and click Startup.
	  4.	Click Disable to disable Single password logon. 
	Modems
	If your modem isn't listed and the command set it uses is 100% Hayes
compatible, select Auto Configure
	files. These files direct Notes to issue a command to the modem to inquire about the modem type (1200, 2400, or 9600) and then to select a Hayes
compatible modem command file accordingly. If your modem is not truly Hayes
compatible, an Auto Configure file may not work with your modem. If that happens, consult the modem documentation for information on customizing an existing command file or creating a new one. 
	To further set up your modem operations, click Setup and do any of the following:
	Change the default settings for maximum port speed, speaker volume, dial mode, dial timeout, hang up time, and port number.
	Select "Log modem I/O" to record modem responses in the log file to make sure your modem is working correctly.
	Select "Log script I/O" to record script responses in the log file to make sure your scripts are working correctly.
	Select "Hardware flow control" to enhance your modem performance.

	Caution  
	 You should not use more than eight characters for the Notes program directory name or Notes data directory name. Longer directory names may not map properly, which prevents the Notes preferences file, NOTES.INI, from locating the directory. 
	(Optional) Click Browse to choose from a list of available drives and directories.
	Click Next.
	 10.	If you chose Customize features - Manual install, do all of the following:a
	Select the Notes features you want to install. You must select Notes Workstation and Personal Data Files to run a Notes workstation. By default, the Notes Install program selects all the features except Additional Dictionaries and Notes Designer ToolBox. If you do not want to install a feature, deselect it. When you select a feature, a description of that feature appears in the box to the right of the list. a

	You can lock your user ID automatically. When you do, Notes logs off Domino servers after a specified time and asks for your password when you resume your work. This way, you can prevent unauthorized users from accessing servers when you leave your workstation unattended. Your user ID must be password-protected for you to lock it.

	You may need to remove the Notes software from a computer -- for example, when a user leaves the company or a computer is designated for another purpose. The quickest way to do this is to use the Notes Uninstall program.
	Note
	 The Uninstall program does not remove any files from the Windows directory (such as NOTES.INI); you must remove these files manually. The Uninstall program also does not delete the Notes items in the Windows Registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
Using the Uninstall program for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
	  1.	Choose Start - Settings - Control Panel from the Desktop Bar.
	  2.	Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
	  3.	Go to the Install/Uninstall page of the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. The Install/Uninstall page includes a list box that displays installed programs that you can uninstall.
	  4.	Select Lotus Notes from the list box and click Add/Remove. 
	  5.	Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the Notes software.
	  6.	Click OK when the Uninstall program is finished.

	When you start Notes, it prompts you for a password for your user ID. Your administrator may have provided a password for you during the Setup program, but you should use the following procedure to change the password to a password that you specify."
	  1.	Choose File - Tools - User ID.
	  2.	Click Set Password.
	  3.	Type a password of a maximum of 31 characters. Click OK.
	  4.	Retype the password, click OK, and then click Done.
	Passwords can consist of any combination of keyboard characters. The first character of the password must be an alphanumeric character. Lotus recommends using a password of at least 13 characters. A phrase is more secure than a password, and may be easier to remember.
	Passwords are case-sensitive. For example, Notes interprets RedCandyCanes ands
	redcandycanes as different passwords.

	  1.	In Notes, select the appropriate Location document for which you are setting up a profile.
	  2.	Exit Notes.

	 13.	Click the Addressing tab to view the Address books for the profile. If you want to add an Address book so you can access it in Microsoft Exchange, click Add. 
	If there is a Notes Public Address Book that does not appear in the list on the Addressing tab, select that Address Book in the Add dialog box and click OK. 
	Repeat the previous two steps for each Notes Public Address Book you want to access in Microsoft Exchange. Address books appear in the Add dialog list if they are accessible from the home server listed in your current Location document. 
	 14.	Select an Address Book from the "Show this address list first" drop-down list.
	 15.	Click OK.
	Note
	  You must select at least one Notes Public Address Book in the Addressing options so Notes can check the names of recipients of your mail. Choose Tools - Options - Addressing to select a Notes Public Address Book if one has not been selected automatically.

	After you select the components you want to install using the Notes Setup program, Notes opens automatically and the workstation Setup program begins. Use the following procedure to set up the workstation.

	Type your full user name exactly as your administrator registered you. If your user ID was supplied to you in a file, Notes automatically enters your name.	
	Type the full name of your home server exactly as your administrator registered you.
	Select the correct type of network protocol your workstation uses to connect to Domino servers. To change the default settings for the network type, click Setup. Change the settings and click OK. Click OK when you are finished setting up the network connection.
	Go to step 14.
	  9.	If you chose Remote connection (via modem), do the following:
	Type your full user name exactly as your administrator registered you. If your user ID was supplied to you in a file, Notes automatically enters your name.
	Type the full name of your home server exactly as your administrator registered you.
	Type the home server's phone number and a dialing prefix (if necessary). Do not enter any spaces or dashes between the numbers.
	Select a modem type and modem port. 
	To change the default settings for the modem port, click Setup. Change the settings. To specify an acquire script, click Acquire Script. Select a script and edit it if necessary, and then click OK. Click OK when you are finished specifying the modem settings.r
	(Optional) Click Script to select a connect script for the modem and edit it if necessary. Then click OK.

	 12.	Do one of the following:
	If you chose Internet (POP3/SMTP) mail server, enter the name of your Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, Incoming (POP3) mail server, mail forwarding address, mail account user name, and mail account password. Click OK. Go to step 15.
	If you chose Domino mail server or No mail server, go to step 15.T
	 13.	Select a time zone. Select "Observe Daylight Savings Time April-October" if appropriate. Click OK.
	 14.	Click OK when the Notes workstation Setup program is complete. 
	 15.	If you are upgrading to a new release of Notes and you backed up any Notes data files, copy these files back to the Notes data directory.
	 16.	Choose File - Exit Notes to quit Notes.
	 17.	To restart Notes after you complete the Setup program, type

	If you encounter problems using the Notes MAPI Service Providers, consider the following: 
	If the default MAPI profile is configured to use the Notes MAPI Service Providers, you can add either Notes or the Exchange Inbox to the StartUp group. If you add both, you encounter unrecoverable setup problems when you start your computer. 
	If you installed Notes before installing Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office applications, you must manually merge the contents of each section of the NOTESPIS.INF file in the Notes program directory into the appropriate sections of the MAPISVC.INF file in the Windows system directory. If you are running a shared install of the Windows 95 or Windows NT operating system, your administrator must move the NWNSP32.DLL file from the Notes program directory to the system directory on the shared drive and manually merge the contents of each section from the NOTESPIS.INF file in the Notes program directory into the appropriate sections of the MAPISVC.INF file in the Windows system directory.
	If you are running Notes from a file server and the public copy of Notes is re-installed on a different file server or volume, make sure your drives are still mapped correctly. If the drive mapping changes, re-install Notes so that your Windows Registry references point to the correct drive on the file server.n
	At the end of the MAPI Service Provider profile setup, you may receive the message "Could not save properties into the profile" because: 
	- Your Location document does not specify the correct name for your mail file or Notes cannot find your mail file. If this is the problem, Notes displays "Unable to Open Mail File." Make sure the file name for your mail file is correct and that you have included its full path.
	- The user associated with the current ID file does not have access to the mail file. If this is the problem, switch ID files or change the mail file setting.
	- Notes could not establish a server connection to access a server-based mail file. Confirm that the server is specified correctly in the Location document and that it is available. Check that you have specified the correct network protocol to access the specified server.
	Close the Control Panel before you attempt to set up the profile again.n
