Setting up Auto Pilot

The easiest way to get an understanding of Auto Pilot is through an example. The example below describes a typical Auto Pilot setup. General rules and naming conventions follow this section.

Jim wants to back up all of his UNIX hosts on a regular basis. Once a week he wants to completely back up all hosts, and during the rest of the week, he only wants to back up files that have been changed.

To set up this Auto Pilot scheme, follow the steps below:

  1. Select your source and destination.

Jim wants to back up the SCO ARCserve/Open host and any remote hosts:

Select any sources, options, and then the destination for this job.

  2. Click the Run button.

  3. Select Auto Pilot as the Backup method.

  4. Click the Setup button.

The default Auto Pilot window displays.

  5. Name the Auto Pilot set.

    Jim names his set ``ENGINEER''.

  6. Choose the backup method.

Since Jim wants a full backup once a week, and only changed files for the rest of the week, he selects ``Differential backup - based on modified date'' (which means only back up files that have been changed since the last full backup).

When setting up any Auto Pilot job, make sure you have at least one full backup a week.

For a full description of available backup methods, see ``Backup method''.

  7. Indicate how many tapes you want to use before they can be reused.

Jim wants to rotate (re-use) his daily tapes often, but save his monthly tapes for a year because he stores them off-site. For this example, Jim needs 21 tapes total (4 daily tapes, 5 weekly tapes and 12 monthly tapes).

For a full description of Tape Recycle, see ``Tape recycle''.

  8. Click OK.

The job gets submitted to the SCO ARCserve/Open queue.

  9. After the job runs, check the daily log.

After each Auto Pilot job, check the daily log for important information, like:
