Configuring your changer for use with SCO ARCserve/Open

Now that you have licensed the Changer Option, you can configure it.

Perform the following steps to get your system ready for use with your changer:

  1. Make sure you have root or root equivalent privileges.

You must have logged in as root before starting SCO ARCserve/Open or typed su to become super user before starting SCO ARCserve/Open.

  2. Open the Device Management window.

All changer configuration options can be found under Device Manager.

  3. Click the Device Group Configuration button.

The Device Group Configuration window appears:

  4. Select the SCSI ID for the changer.

If your changer has only one SCSI ID for both the changer and the tape drive, click the arrow next to the device for changer options.

If you select the changer on the left-hand side, a changer button underneath Remove appears.

  5. Click the Changer button that appears.

    The Changer Configuration window appears.

  6. Select the type of changer you are using.

If the type of changer you are using is different from the one that displays, open the Changer Type menu and choose your changer from the list.

  7. Check if there is a tape head cleaning cartridge in the changer.

If you reserve the last slot in the changer for a tape head cleaning cartridge, mark this option.

SCO ARCserve/Open will always reserve this slot for use by the tape cleaning cartridge and will never span to this tape or allow you to use it for any backup job.

  8. Enter the tape drive's SCSI ID.

If you are using the type of changer that holds more than one tape drive, or that has a different SCSI ID for the tape drive and the changer, enter that SCSI ID here.

SCO ARCserve/Open will not allow you to select a SCSI ID that is already being used by another device or by the changer itself. SCO ARCserve/Open will fill in the SCSI ID of the tape drive if the type of changer you are using shares its SCSI ID with the tape drive and uses LUNs to separate the tape drive and the changer.

  9. Create the tape device groups.

You need to assign a tape device group to each tape drive in your changer (even if there's only one).

If you have more than one tape drive, you will have to divide the slots among each tape drive. For example, you could be using a changer with four tape drives. Each drive belongs to a tape device group and ``owns'' a range of slots. The first drive may own slots 1-29, the second 30-59, and so on. If only one tape drive is in the changer, then you will only have to name one tape device group, because ALL the slots will belong to that tape group. All drives must be assigned at least one slot.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Configure another changer (if necessary) by repeating steps 4-10, or click Config to save your changes and configure the changer.

The Tape Server will restart with your changes.

Your Device Group Configuration window will look like the following:
