About the Client Agent for OS/2
This chapter explains the basic concepts of the
IBM® OS/2®
Client Agent, including:
What is a Client Agent?
The Client Agent for OS/2 is a ``go-between'' that allows
SCO®
ARCserve/®Open from Cheyenne®
to efficiently back up and restore OS/2 machines.
The Client Agent helps SCO ARCserve/Open retrieve and send data to
and from an OS/2 system.
Using SCO ARCserve/Open with the OS/2 Client Agent
provides the following benefits:
-
minimizes load on your communications network.
-
increases efficiency for your SCO ARCserve/Open server by
off-loading the processing of data to the client machine.
-
compatibility and support for the TCP protocol.
-
detailed file and directory information about the remote client in the SCO ARCserve/Open Browser.
The Client Agent for OS/2 is supported
for use with SCO ARCserve/Open Release 2.2.0 and above.
The Client Agent for OS/2 utilizes Push technology to help perform
backup, restore, and compare jobs. All the filtering of files and
directories is done on the OS/2 machine prior to ``pushing'' the data
to the host server (the SCO system running
SCO ARCserve/Open) for processing.
Push technology minimizes the transfer of data to the SCO ARCserve/Open host,
thereby reducing the load on your communications network. The host server
can operate more efficiently because it does not have to filter the data
for the backup job.
