About the Client Agent for Macintosh

This chapter explains the basic concepts of the Apple® Macintosh® Client Agent, including:

What is a Client Agent?

The Client Agent for Macintosh is a ``go-between'' that allows SCO® ARCserve®/Open from Cheyenne® to efficiently back up and restore Macintosh workstations. The Client Agent helps SCO ARCserve/Open retrieve and send data to and from a Macintosh workstation.

Using SCO ARCserve/Open with the Macintosh Client Agent provides the following benefits:

The Client Agent for Macintosh is supported for use with SCO ARCserve/Open Release 2.2.0 and above.

How does the Client Agent work?

The Client Agent for Macintosh utilizes Client technology to help perform backup, restore, and compare jobs. All the filtering of files and directories is done on the Macintosh workstation prior to ``pushing'' the data to the host server (the SCO system running SCO ARCserve/Open) for processing.

Push technology minimizes the transfer of data to the SCO ARCserve/Open host, thereby reducing the load on your communications network. The host server can operate more efficiently because it does not have to filter the data for the backup job.

For example, say you want to back up several report directories from a Macintosh workstation used by your Sales Department. If you back up the workstation without the Client Agent, then all of the data on the client is sent to the SCO ARCserve/Open host. SCO ARCserve/Open then filters out the specific directories flagged for backup. Using the Client Agent, the filtering is done directly on the client machine. Only the specified directories or files are sent to the SCO ARCserve/Open host.
