About this book This book provides the information you need to get your UnixWare(r) 7 system up and running. It includes installation and configuration instructions, as well as introductions to the desktop, system administration tasks, and SCOhelp. You will find the information you need more quickly if you are familiar with: + ``How this book is organized'' + ``Related documentation'' + ``Typographical conventions'' Although we try to present information in the most useful way, you are the ultimate judge of how well we succeed. Please let us know how we can improve this book. How this book is organized After introducing the UnixWare 7 product line, this book describes how to: + prepare your system for installation, including: - ensuring that your system meets minimum hardware requirements - ensuring that your system hardware is supported - filling out installation checklists to ensure that the installation runs smoothly + install UnixWare 7 + perform setup tasks after installation, including: - using the help system - licensing and registering additional products - creating a set of emergency recovery diskettes - configuring additional disk and tape drives - configuring your video card and display The appendix describes: + how to configure necessary installation hardware not auto-detected by the system Related documentation UnixWare 7 systems include comprehensive online documentation. The SCO online documentation is organized into ``topics'' (or subject areas), rather than books. By using topics as entry points into the documentation set, you can access the desired subject directly; you no longer have to determine in which book the material is covered. Most UnixWare 7 programs and utilities are linked to extensive context- sensitive help, which in turn is linked to relevant sections in the online topics. _________________________________________________________________________ NOTE When you upgrade or supplement your UnixWare 7 software, you might also install online documentation that is more current than the printed books that came with the original system. For the most up-to-date information, check the online documentation. _________________________________________________________________________ The UnixWare 7 system also includes the following books in printed form: Runtime Release Notes contain important late-breaking information about installation, hardware requirements, and known limitations UnixWare 7 System Handbook covers many commonly used system administration tasks, such as managing users, starting and stopping the system, working with filesystems, and configuring printers The UnixWare/OpenServer Development Kit and the Java(TM) development kits include extensive documentation of application development issues and tools. Many other useful publications about SCO systems by independent authors are available from technical bookstores.
