Advanced Disk Catalog: README ============================= Please read this file carefully (especially "Installation" chapter) before installing the program to your computer. Contents -------- Program information Company information Description Installation History Registration Copyright and license Technical support Program information ------------------- Program Archive Name: adc120.zip Program Name: Advanced Disk Catalog Program Version: 1.20c Program Release Date: September 1, 1998 Program Description: Catalog system - organize your disks, folders and files Target OS: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 5.0 (Beta) Software type: Shareware ($20) Company information ------------------- Company Name: Elcom Ltd Contact E-mail Address: kitten@elcomsoft.com Contact WWW URL: http://www.elcomsoft.com Contact Postal Address: 2-171 generala Antonova St. Moscow 117279 Russia Contact Telephone/Fax Number: (+7 095) 9741162 Description ----------- Advanced Disk Catalog (ADC) is an easy to use tool with explorer-like interface which allows you to catalog the drives: floppy disks, hard drives (including network ones), optical disks, CD-ROMs, ZIP disks and other media. With ADC you are able to: - Organize volumes, folders and files into categories; - Add comment to each file, folder and disk; - Analyse ZIP, ARJ, RAR and CAB archives; - Search for files/folders using file name or your own comments (with wildcards), limiting the search results by date, size and category; - Search for files in archives; - Update volume information (with saving comments and categories); - Generate the reports which can be imported from the programs like Microsoft Excel; - Search for duplicated files; - Import descriptions from files like "file_id.diz", "files.bbs", "descript.ion" etc.; - Extract description from executable modules (EXE, DLL etc.); - Compare catalogued disk with actual (new files, changed files, modified files); - ... and more. ADC written totally in C++, doesn't use any database engines and so very fast. The database generated by ADC is very compact. Installation ------------ Important! If you've got ADC not from our web page, but from the other source (magazine CD or some software library), please visit our home page - you'll probably find the later version; usually, we release the updates about once a month. We recommend you to uninstall the previous version of ADC (if you have one) from your computer before installing this one. You can do this via "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet. If you'll get the notification that the ADC folder is not empty, be careful when removing it: it may contain the .cat files (the databases created by ADC) you may wish to keep. To install ADC, just run the "setup.exe" and follow the instructions. You'll need to select the target directory and the components to install. Note: the Advanced Disk Catalog may not run correctly if the new version of common control library (comctl32.dll) is not installed; the program requires version 4.70 or later (version 4.72 is recommended). This new version is already available in Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 and Windows NT 4.0; you may also have it if you're using Internel Explorer 3.x or later. The installation program of the Advanced Disk Catalog checks what version do you have, and it'll ask you to update this file if it is old. If it will happen, just run the "40Comupd.exe" to update your system; reboot the computer and start the setup program again. For your convenience, we're distributing "40comupd.exe" together with the Advanced Disk Catalog setup files. Also, please take into account, that this version of ADC, if unregistered, cannot work with databases which contain more than five disks (in the previous releases, there was a limitation on the total size of files in the database -- 2Gb). If you've created such database in version prior to 1.20, you'll still be able to load it, but your changes could not be saved. As a workaround (if you're still evaluating the previous version), you can start the old version of ADC and split your database into a few parts, each with 5 disks or less. Sorry for inconvenience. Technical support ----------------- Before you contact us, please do the following: - Be sure that you're doing everything right. We all make mistakes sometimes... Be attentive. - Look at the Help file: it may already contain an answer to your question. A lot of people ask us something like "how do I:", though the complete information is there. - Run the File Integrity Checker program (installed in Advanced Disk Catalog program group). It just verifies main ADC program files; if it shows "fail" or "file not found" for either adc.exe or validate.dll, it means that your installation is corrupted, or you may have a virus in your system. In this case, the program will not work properly - so, you'll have to run an antivirus program and/or reinstall ADC. - Visit ADC home page in the Internet at http://www.elcomsoft.com/adc.html. It's a good chance that you'll find the newer version of ADC there. If the serious bug has been found in the program, but the new version is not ready yet, we make the hot fix for it. But if you still have a problem with ADC and noting else helps, please contact Mr.Vladimir Katalov at: Phone: +7 095 9741162 Fax: +7 095 9741162 E-mail: kitten@elcomsoft.com (preferred) vladimir@technologist.com vladimir.katalov@usa.net Please inform us about the following: - Advanced Disk Catalog version (from "About" dialog) - Advanced Disk Catalog serial number (if you're a registered user) - where did you get Advanced Disk Catalog (http or ftp site) - Windows 95/98/NT version (including service packs and other fixes installed), US or international, OEM or not - computer information: CPU type and speed, installed memory - description of your problem (as much information as possible to retrieve the problem) Note: you may want to read the "How to Determine the Version of Windows 95 in Use" article by Microsoft.
