Who should I include as my dependents?
Include someone in your plan as a dependent if he or she requires your financial support or contributes income to your household (even if he or she doesnÆt count as a dependent for tax purposes). For example, you may include your children, children from a previous marriage, or your elderly parents.
How do I plan for a child's future?
To plan for raising a child, add income and expenses associated with your children in the Income place or the Expenses place. For example, in the Expenses place, you can plan for the cost of child support, childcare, college expenses, or weddings. To learn more about education expenses, see the Education chapter of Decision Center.
How do I plan for future children?
If you donÆt have children now, but plan to in the future, feel free to include them in your plan. Estimate their approximate birth or adoption, college education costs, and so forth. Pick a date of birth or adoption in the future when you think youÆll begin to raise the child.
How do I plan for an adult dependent's care?
If you think youÆll support an aging parent or other adult dependent, include each dependent in your plan. Consider the potential cost of geriatric care managers, nursing homes, or hospitalization. Also, long-term health care insurance may be an investment option worth considering. To learn more, read relevant articles in the Family chapter of Decision Center.
