Strategies to Get the Most Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is used by every state to award aid, and by many colleges to award grants and needs-based scholarships. This is a quick list of tips for applying for FAFSA in order to get the most financial aid you can:

n
Cut income legitimately: take early or late compensation.

n
Avoid capital gains in the year that counts.

n
Don't include life insurance, cash surrender value, cars, jewelry, art. They are excluded assets.

n
Be careful about student's money. Every dollar earned by students over $1,750 reduces aid by 50 cents. If she saves the money, aid is reduced by another 35 percent. Maybe it's time to use their savings for the college wardrobe or the car. (nah)

n
Do the math right.

n
Fill in all blanks, even zero.

n
Request all forms of aid by checking each box.
