NOTES ON CARBON COPY 32 ======================= This document contains important information about Carbon Copy 32 including the following topics: * New Features in this Release * Information not found in the User's Guide /****************************************************************/ /****************************************************************/ /* */ /* NEW FEATURES IN THIS RELEASE */ /* */ /****************************************************************/ /****************************************************************/ Internet Locator Server Support ------------------------------- Carbon Copy 32 can now use Internet Locator Servers (ILS's) to browse the internet for Carbon Copy 32 hosts in wait for call. ILS servers are located throughout the world and are free to use. They serve as a medium through which Carbon Copy 32 users can identify other Carbon Copy users. In the previous versions of Carbon Copy you could connect across the internet only if you knew the TCP/IP address of the host in wait for call. Now it is much easier. Now you don't have to know the TCP/IP address. When going into wait-for-call, Carbon Copy 32 can now be configured to send a message to one or more ILS servers advertising itself as an available host. A Carbon Copy 32 guest located across the internet can also browse to one or more ILS servers. If the ILS server that the Carbon Copy 32 guest is browsing to "knows" about any hosts in wait-for-call, it will inform the guest. The guest then displays a list of available host. All you have to do is click on one of the available hosts to connect. Connecting across the internet is now as simple and easy as connecting on a local area network! Connect Through Firewall Support -------------------------------- Internet firewalls are designed to protect local networks from unwanted access by people on the internet. They operate by filtering certain types of network traffic. Carbon Copy 32 now offers the features necessary to be able to connect through a firewall. You can now call into your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and access your networked office PC that lies behind your corporate firewall to work from home or access files and resources from anywhere. Technical support representatives can now support their users in the same room, on the next floor, in the next building, or across the country, quickly and easily. Data Encryption --------------- Internet security has become a concern. Carbon Copy 32 address this concern by giving you the ability to encrypt all the data that flows between workstations during a Carbon Copy 32 connection. Should someone be monitoring the data flow of an encrypted Carbon Copy 32 connection, he would see what appears to be random data. Your sensitive data remains concealed. Native NT Security ------------------ Carbon Copy 32 now simplifies your security hassles by offering Native NT Security. You will no longer have to create separate user names and passwords for your Carbon Copy 32 users. With Native NT Security, Carbon Copy 32 users can be granted access based on their NT Login account. You can now specify which users are allowed to connect to your NT workstations and servers, and which Carbon Copy 32 applications that they may use. Multiple IP Adapter Support --------------------------- In today's complex networking environments it is not uncommon for a workstation on a network to have multiple TCP/IP adapters. For example a PC can have a network adapter that it uses to communicate via the local network, and it can also have another network adapter that is used to communicate via a dial-up networking connection. For each network adapter there can be a valid, unique, TCP/IP address. Another example of a workstation that has multiple adapters and Consequently multiple TCP/IP addresses is an NT server that has multiple network cards and acts as a router between two sub-nets. Carbon Copy 32 now gives you control over which adapter is used. Enhanced Dial-up Networking Support ----------------------------------- Carbon Copy 32 can now browse for hosts in wait for call through a dial-up networking connection. Establishing Dial-up networking connections is now easier than ever. Host Pooling ------------ The Host Pooling feature allows you to place many Carbon Copy 32 hosts in wait for call on a network with the same workstation name. A Carbon Copy 32 guest can then browse and connect to one of the available hosts. As other Carbon Copy 32 guests browse, they can simply connect to the next available Carbon Copy 32 host. Remote Install -------------- Remote Install lets you install Carbon Copy 32 to a remote PC. If you are a network administrator and must install Carbon Copy 32 on many users' PC's, you can do so from the comfort of your own office. Remote Start ------------ Remote Start allows you to remotely launch Carbon Copy 32. Once Carbon Copy 32 is launched and in wait for call a user can connect And run Remote Control or File Transfer or any of the other Carbon Copy applications. Quiet Install ------------- If you are a PC support technician and must install Carbon Copy 32 on many PC's, you can reduce the installation time by using quite install. Quiet install lets pre-configure how you want Carbon Copy 32 to be installed, and then quickly and easily installs Carbon Copy 32 without interruption. Host Without User Interface --------------------------- You can now save PC system resources by configuring the Host to run without loading the User Interface. This is automatic when configured to run as a service, or you can choose the "Hide User Interface" option from the tray icon menu. Voice Over Data Support ----------------------- Chat has been significantly enhanced to include voice. Now you can remotely control a PC while talking to the person at the other end at the same time. This feature can be used to save time diagnosing a customer issue, or during a training exercise. Remote Printing --------------- The Remote Printing feature allows you to print files from any application to the printer at the Host location, or the printer at the Guest location. For example, you could use Remote Printing if you are away from your office, but want to print a document located on your office PC to the printer at your current location. Simply connect to your office PC, and set up Remote Printing to send the document to the printer at your current location. Automated File Transfer ----------------------- With the new Auto Pilot feature, you can configure Carbon Copy to automatically send or receive files at any scheduled time. Auto Pilot also features a unique rescheduling feature which will ensure the files are transfered. Cursor Track ------------ If you turn on "Track blinking cursors", your Remote Control view will automatically track the blinking cursor such as that found in Notepad or WordPad. Host Mouse Motion ----------------- If you turn on "Show Host Mouse Motion", the Guest mouse cursor will now be updated when the Hosts mouse is moved. This is perfect for teaching scenarios when the Host instructor wants to point out something to the Guest student. BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY ====================== Carbon Copy 32 is fully backward compatible with Carbon Copy for Windows release 3.0 and later. Carbon Copy 32 can also establish dial-up connections with Carbon Copy for DOS release 7.0. CARBON COPY TERMINAL ==================== Carbon Copy Terminal fully supports baud rates up to 115200. To use Carbon Copy Terminal at a baud rate of 115200, an enhanced serial port card with a 16550 UART and a communications driver that supports 115200 must be installed. Note that Windows 95 does support 115,200 BPS. INFORMATION NOT FOUND IN THE USER'S GUIDE ========================================= Running Setup with Limited Disk Space ------------------------------------- Setup requires a minimum of 5Mb of disk space plus 2Mb of temporary workspace to install the complete Carbon Copy 32 product. If your disk space is limited to less than this amount, and you have a previously installed version of Carbon Copy for Windows on your hard disk, you may want to uninstall it so you have enough space to reinstall the product. Adobe Type Manager ------------------ Adobe Type Manager (ATM) modifies (patches) Windows in ways which are not compatible with Carbon Copy 32 for Windows. If you wish to use Carbon Copy on a system with ATM installed, you must disable ATM. Conferencing Server ------------------- You can setup Carbon Copy as an unmanned conferencing server by seting the "UnmannedServer=On" in the [Carbon Copy] section of the CCW32.INI file. This will enable Carbon Copy to automatically answer the first voice chat session, and refer all future voice chat aprovals to the first voice chat station. If you do not want any aprovals, then set "AutoAnswer=On in the [Voice Chat] section of the CCW32.INI file. This will enable Carbon Copy to automatically answer all incomming voice chat sessions. Restart or Resume AutoPilot Tasks --------------------------------- If you have configured an AutoPilot task to resume or restart a file transfer in the event of a failure, it will attempt to retry 5 times by default. If after 5 attempts the task has not completed, AutoPilot will stop trying to run this task. You may change the number of retries by adding the "MaxAutoPilotRetries=n" option to the [File Transfer] section of the CCW32.INI file where "n" represents the number of retries. If you set MaxAutoPilotRetries=0, AutoPilot will try indefinitely to complete the task. IMPORTANT: Use the resume or restart AutoPilot options with care when making long distance modem or dial-up networking connections. Creating Phonebook Connection Icons using ILS --------------------------------------------- When creating a phonebook connection icon that will establish a TCP/IP connection using an ILS server you must specify the workstation name using the following format: WORKSTATION_NAME{xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx}, where WORKSTATION_NAME represents the name of the host, and {xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx} represents the TCP/IP address of the host that is in wait for call on the ILS server. For example, if a Carbon Copy 32 user is in wait for call on ILS1.CarbonCopy.Com with the workstation name of "OfficePC" and his TCP/IP address is 123.45.67.89, you should create a phonebook entry with "OfficePC{123.45.67.89}" as the workstation name. The easiest way to create a phonebook connection icon is to first browse using the ILS server. When the list of available hosts appears on the network tab, right-click on the host to which you want to connect, and select Create Phonebook Entry. This will create a phonebook entry for you. KNOWN ISSUES ============ Logoff upon Disconnect ---------------------- The Logoff upon Disconnect feature (NT Only) may not work properly on the original release of Windows NT 4.0 or on the Windows NT service release 1.0. To resolve this issue, upgrade your Windows NT workstation to service release 2.0 or greater. Video Card Problems Under Remote Control ---------------------------------------- The Diamond Viper video card will not work correctly as a remote control host in hi-color (65536 colors) mode under Windows NT 3.51. Change the host display resolution to 256 colors to correct the problem. If you have a Cirrus 542x video card set for 256 colors on a Windows NT PC, Carbon Copy 32 may indicate that it cannot install the video driver. If this occurs, add the following entry to the [Remote Control] section of the CCW32.INI file, located in the directory where you installed Carbon Copy 32: VideoDriver=VGA256 Save the changes you made to CCW32.INI and restart Carbon Copy 32. Answer Yes at the Video Driver Installation prompt, and reboot your PC. Some older video drivers for the Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 video card may not work properly as a Remote Control host on Windows 95. If you experience problems with this video card, upgrade the video card drivers to version 4.02.020 or later. Backwards Compatibility with Previous Versions of Carbon Copy ------------------------------------------------------------- Connections from Carbon Copy 32 to Carbon Copy 3.0 over IPX or NetBIOS are not currently supported. However, you can make connections between Carbon Copy 32 and Carbon Copy 3.0 using TCP/IP or TAPI (modem). Carbon Copy 32 can also connect via modem with Carbon Copy for DOS version 7.0. Connections from Carbon Copy 32 to Carbon Copy 3.0 will not support Remote Printing. To use remote printing, users must connect between Carbon Copy 32 5.0 (or later) and another Carbon Copy 32 5.0 (or later.) Cannot launch multiple Carbon Copy 32 utilities --------------------------------------------------------- If you are experiencing problems launching multiple Carbon Copy utilities, add the following line to the CCW32.INI file: 1. Open the file CCW32.INI 2. In the [Carbon Copy] section, add the line: UtilityTimeout=40 3. By default, Utility Timeout is set to 40 seconds. Try increasing the amount of seconds for utility timeout. Do not set this parameter lower than 40 seconds. 4. Save any changes you made to CCW32.INI. You must restart Carbon Copy for the change to take effect. Running Carbon Copy as a Service on a Windows NT PC ---------------------------------------------------------- When you install Carbon Copy on a Windows NT PC using a Shared installation, running Carbon Copy as a service is not supported. Make sure you have not selected the Load Carbon Copy before Windows Login Prompt on the Security Options Global tab. Full Duplex Voice Chat sessions ------------------------------- Carbon Copy only supports full duplex audio via Voice Chat for the first two stations. When a third station connects, Voice Chat will be switched to half duplex mode. When the third stations disconnects, the remaining two stations will be set back to full duplex. Waiting for Call and Browsing ILS servers ----------------------------------------- Waiting for call and browsing of ILS servers will be done in alphabetical order. If the first server is slow, or not responding, there may be a delay before Carbon Copy proceeds to the next server in the list. As Carbon Copy is trying to communicate to the ILS server, a yellow light is displayed next to the ILS server in the status tab. If the server continues to be unresponsive, remove it from the ILS servers list in the communications property sheets.
