SSL

Secure Sockets Layer is the leading security protocol on the Internet. When an SSL session is started, a Web browser sends its public key to the Web server so that the server can securely send a private key to the browser. The browser and server exchange data via private key encryption during that session. Developed by Netscape, SSL may be merged with other protocols and authentication methods proposed by the IETF into a new protocol known as Transaction Layer Security (TLS).
