FAT

The File Allocation Table keeps track of where data is stored on a disk. It is supported in IBM OS/2, Microsoft DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows NT systems. FAT does not support the advanced security features of NTFS on Windows NT systems.

The original 16-bit version of the FAT, which is widely used, is limited to 2 GB hard drive partitions. The 32-bit version (FAT32) became available with Windows 95 OSR2 in late 1996 and increases the limit to 2 TB.
