Various technologies developed by Microsoft and derived from OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) and COM (Component Object Model). ActiveX applies to a diverse set of COM-based technologies, many of which are targeted for the Internet. Most people think only of ActiveX controls, which represent a specific way of implementing ActiveX technologies.
