1 Introduction

1.1 What Is ShotWiz?

ShotWizÖ is a revolutionary club selection software tool for the Palm Computing« platform. Once you use it, you will feel handicapped without it. Using a sophisticated aerodynamics model, ShotWiz removes club and aimpoint uncertainty by computing how you should play your shot to compensate for wind, altitude, temperature and elevation changes. Based on the way you hit your clubs, ShotWiz computes the best club to use, where to aim and how hard to swing.

1.2 About This Manual

This manual is a "how to" reference. Feel free to jump to topics that interest and concern you. To locate a topic, use the table of contents listed above. This manual assumes that you understand and are comfortable using a Palm Computing« platform.

1.3 Getting Technical Support

If this manual does not address your problem, you can contact Granite River Inc. at:

  •  Email                support@shotwiz.com

2 Getting Started

2.1 Minimum System Requirements

Computer                          Palm Computing Platform
Operating System              Palm OS 2.0 or newer
RAM                                .5 MB

ROM                               50KB

2.2 Installing ShotWiz

On your host PC, run the PalmPilotÖ install tool or whichever tool you use to install files on your Palm Computing
« device. Install the file shotwiz.prc. After you HotSync« your host computer with your Palm Computing« device, the icon for ShotWiz will appear on its main screen.

2.3 Activating ShotWiz

From the Palm Computing« device's desktop, tap the icon . The first time you run ShotWiz, you will immediately be dumped into the screen labeled "ShotWiz Train". Chapter 3 of this manual guides you through the process of training ShotWiz about your game.

2.4 Uninstalling ShotWiz

If for some reason you would like to uninstall ShotWiz (though we can't imagine anyone would)

For Palm OSÖ 2.0:

  1. From the Palm Computing« device's desktop, tap the icon .
  2. Tap the button labeled "Delete apps".
  3. Delete the applications "golferDB" and "ShotWiz"

For Palm OSÖ 3.0 and newer delete the application from the device's main screen using the pull down menu.

3  Setting Preferences For ShotWiz

3.1 Setting units of measure

As a new feature in Version 1.3, the units of measure (Metric or English) can be set from the "ShotWiz Preferences" screen. Previous versions of ShotWiz used only English units of measure (yards, feet, Farenheit). The "ShotWiz Preferences" screen can be opened from either the "ShotWiz Main" or "ShotWiz Train" screens via the "Options" pull-down menu or with the graffiti shortcut "/P".

4  Teaching ShotWiz About Your Game

4.1 Before you begin using ShotWiz

Before you begin using ShotWiz, measure the distance the ball carries in the air for each club in your bag. DO NOT INCLUDE THE DISTANCE THE BALL ROLLS in your measurements. If you already know the carry distances for your clubs, follow the instructions below to train ShotWiz about your game. Otherwise, head for the driving range on a calm (no wind) day. Precise knowledge of your carry distances are critical for ShotWiz.

4.2 Telling ShotWiz which clubs you use

On the screen labeled "ShotWiz Train" (this will be the opening screen the first time you run ShotWiz), select the clubs you normally carry in your bag by touching the checkboxes in the first column of the table. A checked box indicates the club is in your bag. Use the scrollbar on the right side of the screen to scroll the training data table. When recommending a club, ShotWiz will only consider the clubs with checked boxes

4.3 Entering the loft and distance of each club

Set the loft of each club by tapping on the loft entry you wish to edit.
Adjust the loft using the slider below the table which appears after the loft entry is touched. When you have adjusted the loft to its proper value (in degrees), press the "SET" button to update the training data table. If you do not know the lofts of your clubs, use the nominal settings provided.

Next, adjust the carry distance (not including how far the ball rolls) for each club in your bag the same way you set the loft values. Don't forget to press the "SET" button to update the table.

4.4 Entering the altitude and temperature

Set the altitude at the location you recorded your club distances
by touching the field to the right of the "Altitude" label (the default setting is 500 ft above sea level). A form labeled "Current Altitude" will appear at the top of the screen. Adjust the slider to the altitude of the course or driving range you recorded how far you hit each club. Because of the effect of altitude on air density the proper altitude setting is critical.

Next, set the temperature at the location you recorded your club distances at by touching the field to the right of the "Temperature" label (the default temperature setting is 72 degrees Farenheit). A form labelled "Current Temperature" will appear at the top of the screen. Adjust the slider to the temperature at the golf course or driving range you recorded your carry distances.

4.5 Saving the training data

Once you have input all of your training data, press the "OK" button at the bottom of the screen. You will then be prompted to enter a name to save this data under. Type in your name and press the "Save" button. ShotWiz will then perform some computations using the training data provided and dump you into the screen labeled "ShotWiz Main". On this screen you will see the name you saved your training data under displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If you want to modify any of your training data, simply touch the stylus on this label and load your training database.

5 Using ShotWiz For Club, Aimpoint and Swing Strength Recommendations

5.1 Setting the current altitude and temperature

On the screen labeled "ShotWiz Main", set the current altitude and temperature at the course you are about to play. Unless the temperature changes dramatically during your round, you will only need to set these values before your begin playing. Note, the temperature and altitude you set on this screen are not the same as you set when training ShotWiz. The training settings are set for the conditions when you determined how far the ball flies for each club. These altitude and temperature settings are the current conditions of the course you are playing.

5.2 Using ShotWiz for a club, aimpoint and swing strength recommendation

There are four basic steps required to compute your optimal club, aimpoint and swing strength for a shot:

  1. Set the distance to the location you want the ball to land using the "distance" slider bar (ShotWiz does not currently compensate for how far the ball will roll once it hits the ground).

  2. Set the elevation difference to the location you want the ball to land using the slider labeled "elev". This parameter is NOT the altitude you set earlier. It is the distance up (positive elevation) or down (negative elevation) from the location you hit the ball to the location you want the ball to land. For instance, if you are hitting a shot to an elevated green which is 5 yards above the location you are standing, adjust the "elev" slider to 5 yds.

  3. Align the centerline in the circle on the display with your target and input the wind speed and direction by touching your stylus inside the bounds of the circle. You will notice when you touch the screen inside the circle, ShotWiz draws a line with an arrow at its tip (called a vector) from the center of the circle to the location you touch on the screen. Align the vector such that the arrow is pointing in the direction the wind is blowing (NOT into the wind). Adjust the length of the vector until the "wind: mph" field indicates the current wind speed.

  4. Press the "Go" button. After a second or two, ShotWiz displays a new screen labeled "ShotWiz Recommendation". The field under the "Club" label is the club you should use; the field under the "Strength" label indicates how hard you should swing and the field under the "Aimpoint" label tells you how far to the left or right of your target you should aim your shot. The scrollers on the far right of the screen allow you view how you would hit other clubs to play this same shot.
