SYNASPISMOS
defined itself at its founding Congress (June 1992) as a party of the new modern
democratic Left, which combines the values of the labour movement for social justice with
those of ecology and feminism. A party fighting for the transformation of capitalist
society into a democratic socialist one. We are fighting for a new modern democratic Left
focused on the universal dimension of global interdependence. At the same time,
SYNASPISMOS has established itself as a force of the European Left. Accordingly, SYNASPISMOS has an open policy in its international relations. It tries to develop communication, cooperation and common action with the broadest possible spectrum of left and progressive forces. Given the position of Greece as a European country, member of the EU, as well as a country of the Balkans and the Mediterranean, the development of relations with the respective left and progressive forces is a priority for SYNASPISMOS. At the European level our main framework of international cooperation is the New European Left Forum (NELF), which started in November 1991 as a network of parties and meets every six months (a NELF Women's Network was also established in May 1996). The parties participating in NELF approved a joint declaration in December 1993 entitled "A new Europe for a new world", which is the basis for their cooperation. In addition, SYNASPISMOS has relations and develops contacts with socialist, socialdemocratic, green and communist parties in Europe. In the European Parliament, SYNASPISMOS takes part in the European Unitarian Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE / NGL) Group. Promoting peace and cooperation in the troubled Balkan region is one of the main concerns and has absorbed a great deal of SYNASPISMOS' international activity on bilateral and multi-lateral levels. A "Balkan Forum of Left and Progressive Forces" was organised in June 1995 in Athens on the initiative of SYNASPISMOS. Also on our initiative a Balkan Women's Forum of left and progressive parties and social movements was held in Thessaloniki in December 1996. Both the above meetings will be repeated. SYNASPISMOS is particularly interested in the development of close relations with left and other political forces in Cyprus. It has also relations with left and peace forces in Turkey, the Arab countries and Israel, with the ANC of S.Africa and other progressive forces in Africa with left parties in many Asian countries and Australia, with the Sao Paulo Forum (Latin American and Carribean Left). |
