Synaspismos' Delegation visit Belgrade: Successive meetings with Yugoslavia's leaders

Belgrade, April 6, 1999

A Synaspismos delegation headed by its President Nicos Constantopoulos, accompanied by Stergios Pitsiorlas, member of the Political Secretariat and Panos Trigazis, International Secretary arrived in Belgrade on Tuesday, April 6 via Sofia, Bulgaria.

N.Constantopoulos-Sl.MilocevicDuring its stay in the Yugoslav capital the SYN delegation had successive meetings with Slobodan Milocevic-President of Yugoslavia, Mr.Milutinovic-President of Serbia, Mr.Yovanovic-Foreign Affairs Minister and representatives of the Socialist Party of Serbia and the Yugoslav Left Party.

After the meeting with Mr.Milocevic, the Synaspismos President stated the following:

"We came to Belgrade to express our solidarity to the Yugoslav people. To add our voice to the voices all over the world asking to stop this insane war. To stop the air raids. We came to Belgrade because someone had to come to bring the voice of the other Europe, the civil Europe, the Europe of the working people.

I explained to President Milocevic the position of SYNASPISMOS:

  • The air raids must stop.
  • All conflicts must cease and the procedure of a political solution must be set in motion.
  • All refugees must return to their homes.

The political solution should include provisions for the respect of Yugoslavia's borders, the autonomy of Kosovo and the protection of all minority rights within the state and territorial sovereignty of Yugoslavia, under the joint responsibility of the United Nations Organization and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The first priority is the cessation of the air raids because this insane war puts to the test the whole of humanity as well as the values, the principles and the organizations which ensure the co-existence of peoples and states".
