Use the options in the General property sheet to set expiration policies for newsgroups. These policies specify the article age limit and directory size limit for newsgroups; they also specify the newsgroups to which the policy applies. If a newsgroup is assigned to more than one expiration policy, the more restrictive policy applies. The General property sheet contains the following options:
| Option | Description |
| Policy name | The name of the policy. |
| Affected newsgroups | A list of the newsgroups to which the policy applies. The asterisk (*) wildcard character specifies multiple newsgroups. For example, rec.* denotes and includes all newsgroups starting with "rec." |
| Newsgroup | The name of the newsgroup that is being added. Use the asterisk (*) wildcard character to specify multiple newsgroups. To add a newsgroup, type the name of the newsgroup being added, and then choose Add. |
| Articles older than | Removes articles that are older than a specified number of days. The default is 7 days. |
| Combined group size | Removes the oldest news articles when the combined size of all of the newsgroups to which this policy applies exceeds a specified limit. The default is 500 MB. |
| Both | Enables both the Articles older than and Combined group size options. |
