membership agent | A key component of Microsoft Membership System that is used to access the security database. It allows authentication and access control for a distinct membership community. |
Membership System | A Microsoft server application that you can use to register new users, authenticate users, authorize access to areas of the service on a controlled basis, and generate billing events for processing by an external billing program. |
MMC | Microsoft Management Console. The underlying program used by Internet Service Manager. |
NTFS | Windows NT file system. The file system required for the files used by Microsoft NNTP Service. It provides security and access control for data files by using directory and file permissions. |
NTLM | Windows NT Local Area Network Manager. The security protocol of Microsoft® Windows NT®. |
Ping utility | Packet Internet Groper. The program that verifies connections to one or more remote computers by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo packets to the computers and listening for echo reply packets. |
proxy server | A server that acts as a security barrier between an internal network and the Internet. It also minimizes network traffic by locally caching frequently used documents. |
SNMP | Simple Network Management Protocol. An industry-standard protocol for organization-wide system and network management programs. |
SSL | Secure Sockets Layer technology. An encryption scheme that protects the contents of packets being sent on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network. |
TCP/IP | Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The standard Internet protocol for transferring data among networked computers. |
UNC | Universal naming convention. The standard format for paths that include a local area network file server. |
URL | Uniform Resource Locator. An address to an object, document, page, or other destination on the Internet or an intranet. |
