Desktop Hard Disk Drives

IBM Deskstar 5 3.5-inch 4.3 and 6.4 GB low profile ATA disk drives

High-capacity storage for today's most advanced desktop applications

Deskstar wins PC Computing's 'Best' award

Highlights

Enhanced capacity
Capacities of 1.62 GB per platter meet the needs of a broad range of today's higher-capacity desktop applications. This superior capacity is made possible through today's advanced processors, enhanced video compression technology and emerging workstation-like applications for Windows NT. *

Superior performance
With an average seek time of 9.5 ms and sustained data rate of 5.4 MB/sec. (min.), this solution provides the enhanced performance required by today's data-intensive software applications, the latest professional-quality video and sound applications, large databases, and collaborative processing such as Lotus Notes.

Increased data performance
PRML digital data channel capability delivers increased media-to- buffer and buffer transfer rates, enhancing data performance.

Data protection
S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) protocol support protects data availability and helps alert a system of impending drive failure.

Leading drive technology

The Deskstar 5 achieves it's enhanced capacity and performance by taking advantage of IBM's development and implementation experience in advanced disk drive technologies. These technologies include Magneto-Resistive (MR) heads, No-ID sector formatting and the PRML digital channel.

MR heads offer increased areal density, reducing the number of disks and heads required for a given capacity. No-ID sector formatting further increases storage capacity by eliminating the overhead caused by the duplicate storage of each data sector's ID field onto the disk, creating more available disk space for customer data. The PRML digital channel implemented now on IBM's newest desktop drives such as the Deskstar 5 allows for higher areal densities, significantly enhancing the drive's overall performance.

The combination of these three advanced technologies allows the Deskstar 5 drive to achieve its high 1.62 GB per platter capacity, providing exceptional disk drive capacities for performance desktop, small and home office PCs.

Interface

The Deskstar 5 has a Fast ATA-3 interface and an AT interface transfer rate of 16.6 MB/sec. enabled by using PIO Mode-4, DMA Mode-2 and 33.3 MB/sec. made possible by using Ultra DMA/33, ensuring optimum data performance. The Deskstar 5 supports both Logical Block Address (LBA) and extended Cylinder Head Sector (CHS) addressing modes.

IBM quality and service

IBM drives are backed by an array of technical support and services, including customer support , qualification support and integration assistance. This comprehensive support package is designed to ensure that IBM customers can continue to develop and manufacture high- quality, cost-effective systems.
