All Rights Reserved. ************************************************************************ INTRODUCTION ************************************************************************ This release of the "HP LaserJet 5Si and 5SiMX PCL Printer Driver" supports HP's Enhanced PCL5 printer language with the HP LaserJet 5Si and 5SiMX printers. It includes the following components: HP5SI.DRV Printer Driver: 2.40 READ5SI.TXT: 1.00 Version 2.40 has been updated from previous versions to support Microsoft's new Windows 95 Operating System (in addition to Windows 3.1 and Windows For Workgroups (WFW) 3.11). It has also been updated to support bi-directional communication in Windows 3.1/3.11 Netware clients. See the "Bi-directional..." paragragh in the USER HINTS section of this README. The printer driver name in Windows will be "HP LaserJet 5Si/5SiMX". For additional information on the printer features and driver features, refer to the online help included with each software component. ************************************************************************ BEFORE YOU INSTALL! ************************************************************************ - Close all applications and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident)programs that load at startup (in Windows or DOS) such as virus checkers, fax utilities, etc., and all other applications that may be open. - Close any shell utilities such as: Microsoft Office Manager, Norton Desktop, Dashboard, etc. - Exit any previous version of HP Status Window that may be running. These precautions help ensure a smooth installation. After installing the HP LaserJet Printer Driver, you can turn these programs back on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HINT regarding closing applications: In Windows 95, click on the respective icon(s) in the "Taskbar" and then close any applications that may be open. In Windows 3.1/3.11, simultaneously press [Ctrl] and [Esc] to launch the "Task List" window. In it select each application, except Program Manager, and click on "End Task" to close it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HINT regarding closing shell utilities: In order to close some shell utilities you may need to refer to the documentation provided with that utility if you need more assistance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HINT #1 regarding file sharing violation messages: If some applications are loaded via Windows "startup", you may continue to receive file sharing violation messages during driver installation. It may be necessary to reboot without any applications or utilities automatically loaded by "startup". See your Windows documentation on the "startup" to disable these applications during driver installation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HINT #2 regarding file sharing violation messages: If an application has used an older version of this driver in the same session, i.e. without rebooting Windows, you may receive a file sharing violation message. When Windows uses a driver, many of the files used are locked to prevent overwriting them. The options below are provided for your assistance. 1. Close the application and reboot Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. 2. Windows 3.1 - Use Control Panel and delete old driver. You can then try to install the driver. 3. Windows 95 - 1. Click on "Start | Settings | Printers". Select and delete the driver. Click on "Start | Settings | Printers". 2. Double-Click on the "Add Printer" Icon. 3. Follow the instructions of the "Add Printer Wizard". 4. At the "Manufacturers / Printers" screen, click on the "Have Disk" button. 5. Enter the drive and directory (example: A: or B:), press [Enter] or click on "OK". Or, you may click on "Browse" to search for the drive and directory where the driver files are stored. 6. Follow the instructions on your screen and make your selections. 7. Read the final screen and press "OK". Upgraded Windows 95 driver installation: from Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroups 3.11 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have used this "HP LaserJet 5Si/5SiMX Printer Driver" (v2.40) with Windows 3.1 or Windows For Workgroups 3.11 and upgrade to Windows 95, no further steps are necessary. Choose the "Control Panel" from the Main Group in Program Manager. 2. Choose the "Printers" icon from the Control Panel window. 3. The Printer’s dialog box appears. Choose the "Add>>" button. 4. The "List of Printers" dialog box appears. Select "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer" (first line in list). 5. Choose the "Install" button. 6. Enter the drive and directory where the driver files are stored (example: A: or B:); press [Enter]. 7. At the "Add Unlisted or Updated Printer" dialog box, highlight the available printers: "HP LaserJet 5Si/5SiMX" and press [Enter]. ************************************************************************ USER HINTS ************************************************************************ Bi-directional communication for Windows 3.1 or 3.11 Netware Clients If you are a Windows 3.1 or 3.11 Netware client, bi-directional communication is available when the printer is connected to a Novell Netware network by an HP JetDirect Print Server or a Novell Netware NLM for HP LaserJet printers. You need to obtain and install JetAdmin for Netware version A.02.11 which currently can be found in the Network Connectivity section of Access HP. Select Software and Support, Network Connectivity, HP JetAdmin Software for Netware, version A.02.11. If the printer is not connected to a JetDirect card, the HP Print Server NLM for Netware is now available in the same location.
