Previewing by scrubbing the time ruler

To check edits or effects, you can drag the edit line in the Timeline window, an action known as scrubbing. The playback speed is dictated by the speed at which you drag.

To preview by scrubbing the time ruler:

Do one of the following:

  • Drag the edit line in the time ruler. Premiere displays program frames without applied effects.
  • To render-scrub, or scrub while previewing applied effects, press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag the edit line in the time ruler.
  • To scrub while viewing only the alpha channel mask, press Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS) as you drag the edit line in the time ruler.

  • You can also use the Monitor source and program controllers to view frames without applied effects (see Displaying a clip).
