Introduction

Voice support in Opera is based on the Voice XML standard and can basically do two things:

The voice support is based on the English language.

Requirements

  1. You need to install a version of Opera with voice support
  2. Your sound card must have microphone and speakers properly connected

Note: Make sure the volume controls for microphone and speakers are not zero or muted.

Speaking to Web pages

Opera with voice support enables you to communicate with Web services using your voice and hearing.

Follow these steps to see an example of how this works:

  1. Click the form below and listen to what is said
  2. Press and hold the Voice button on the main bar
  3. Speak into your microphone and let go of the Voice button

If you do this properly, a synthetic voice will repeat the word you said.

Note: You can use the Scroll Lock key as a substitute for the Voice button.

Speaking to Opera

You can control the Opera user interface with your own voice, along with - or instead of - the mouse and keyboard.

  1. Enable the option to control Opera using voice
  2. Go to a Web page
  3. Press and hold the Voice button on the main bar
  4. Say "Browser reload" into your microphone and let go of the Voice button

With a few attempts of pronounciation you should be able to tell Opera to do a variety of things.

Tip: If you want to execute voice commands without having to press the Voice button, enable the option to recognize voice commands automatically.

Available voice commands

Click in Voice preferences to explore the full list of voice commands.

Note: All voice commands to control Opera must be preceeded with the word "Browser", for example "Browser home" to go to your home page.

Customizing voice commands

To use a different word to execute an existing voice command:

  1. Select the voice command in the list that you wish to edit
  2. To use a different word to execute the command, click the left column and write the word you want to see

Tip: If you don't want to modify the original voice setup, you can create your own setup with words to control Opera.

Making your own voice commands

To add a voice command of your own:

  1. Click on the context within which the voice command should apply and click
  2. Write the word you want to speak to perform the action and press Tab
  3. Press space or start typing, then choose an action from the list

Note: Commands added under "Application" can be activated at all times.
