NOTE: Much of the following is from the orignal readme included with the msstyles version. Credit goes to wywywywy for writing it up. ----------------------------------- 1. Introduction 2. Gonx Design 3. BeOS Philosophy 4. Further Info 5. Credits ----------------------------------- 1. Introduction The Gonx theme is a Visual Style for Microsoft Windows XP. The main aim of this project is to re-create and show respects for the BeOS. As you probably know, Be Inc. closed its business years ago, but there is still a very strong BeOS enthusiast base. At this point in time in 2003, many of us are forced to use Windows XP for various reasons, be it work, gaming or whatever. But because we love BeOS, so I create this Gonx theme to re-create the interface. ----------------------------------- 2. Gonx Design The Gonx UI is designed by Cotito (Nicolas Sassiat), a BeOS enthusiast in France. http://cotito.free.fr/ It is a mock-up interface that Cotito (or we all!) likes BeOS to be. You can see more Gonx (fake) shots here: http://cotito.free.fr/projects/Gonx/gonx-index.html Remember, the screen shots are fake... there are currently no OS's using the interface yet. These are rather a prove of concept/idea that shows how the future of BeOS could be (BeOS is not quite dead yet). ----------------------------------- 3. BeOS Philosophy BeOS is a slick, well-crafted, user-friendly operating system designed from the ground up for performance. BeOS is made by a company called Be, Inc., hence the name. It's very fast, extremely stable, and for most people boots in under 15 seconds. Best of all, BeOS Personal Edition is free! The free BeOS Personal Edition, among many BeOS applications, can be download at BeBits. http://www.bebits.com You may however wish to use another BeOS distribution, BeOS Max. http://www.beosmax.org/ This distribution includes all the common drivers and applications, as well as a nice installer. So you do not have to install them seperately. I mentioned that the BeOS is not quite dead yet, because there are groups trying to re-create them! (not just the interface!) -- OpenBeOS - OpenBeOS is a project dedicated to the re-creation, followed by the extension, of the BeOS. Individual servers and APIs (known as kits) are being re-written from scratch by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who want to continue the revolution started by Be Inc. The kernel is being based on NewOS, a microkernel written by a former Be engineer, and adapted by a dedicated team of hard core programmers. The OpenBeOS *may* use the Gonx interface in the future. You can download some of the beta "kits" on their website. http://www.openbeos.org -- BlueEyedOS - BlueEyedOS is like OpenBeOS, in a sense that it tries to re-create BeOS completely from ground up. But unlike OpenBeOS, BlueEyedOS is based on the Linux kernel and XFree86. With these 2 components, we have already the "equivalent" of the BeOS kernel and accelerated OpenGL. Although application backward-compatibility is not possible, it adds further extensibility to the project. The BlueEyedOS *will* use the Gonx interface in the future. Testing of the BlueEyedOS is not public at the moment. http://www.blueeyedos.com/ -- Zeta - As Be Inc. closed its business in 2001, all the assets and intellectual properties of Be Inc. are now belong to Palm Inc. However, before Be Inc. closed the doors, YellowTab (producer of Zeta) is granted to right to "use" the sourcecode of BeOS without limitations. Therefore, unlike the other two projects, YellowTab can continue the development of BeOS (instead of create from ground up) and rename is to Zeta. The Zeta *will not* use the Gonx interface, but will use the Dano interface in the future. Zeta is expected to be publicly available this year (2003). http://www.yellowtab.com/ ***** If you can, please help the OpenBeOS or BlueEyedOS. System programming, application programming, bugs hunting, design, project management, etc Anything welcomed! ***** ----------------------------------- 4. Further Info To be as close to the original (or intended) BeOS interface, you can try these.
