Questions related to
installing jv16 PowerTools
Q: What kind of registry entries jv16 PowerTools adds
to the registry during the installation?
A: jv16 PowerTools just register a the .jvb filetype
so you can execute jv16 PowerTools batch files by double clicking
them. The program doesn't add any other registry entries. You
can remove the .jvb filetype's registration from Preferences
> More Advanced.
Q: What is the difference between the installation packages
(One with installer, the .zip and the .rar archive) ?
A: Nothing. The installer gives you more options to install
the files but the files are the same. Some people just like
installers and some don't, that's why I distribute my program
in a few different forms.
Before using jv16 PowerTools
Q: Can jv16 PowerTools destroy my computer?
A: jv16 PowerTools is like an axe, if you know how to
use it you can use it as a powerful tool but if you don't
really know how to use it you can someday hit your leg with
it.
Q: What does the Disclaimer really mean?
A: It basically means that what ever you do with jv16
PowerTools you are on your own. If you manage to destroy your
computer, your girlfriend or this universe with it, it is really
your fault. The author of jv16 PowerTools is not responsible.
For more info, read the disclaimer. If you don't agree with
this policy, do not use jv16 PowerTools.
Questions related to the
basic usage of jv16 PowerTools
Q: The program always asks an username and password,
what is the password?
A: You have most likely triggered some of the program's
security feature. Most likely you have first run the program
and after that moved it to another directory or another computer,
this is not allowed. If you want to move the program to another
directory or copy it to other computer(s) do not start the program
after you have downloaded it. This problem may also occur if
your computer's name contains some invalid characters.
Anyway, you can solve the problem by first uninstalling it and
then reinstallingit. Installing it over the top of the non-working
version might not fix it.
Q: What are those little images on the front all items
in the Registry Tool?
A: They indicate whether the item is safe to delete or
not. A green means that the item should be safe to delete, a
red means that removing the item can very dangerous and a grey
question mark means that jv16 PowerTools doesn't know.
Q: Why some lists has those little boxes where one must
put a tick to and some list don't ?
A: jv16 PowerTools uses this for safety reasons. Every
time you tick an item you know that you are about to remove
that item.
Q: What are those 'Unknown Entries' ?
A: They are items that jv16 PowerTools can't recognise,
this doesn't mean however that they are safe to remove.
Q: Are 'Unknown Entries' or items marked as 'N/A' always
safe to remove?
A: No.
Q: Why I can just remove items and not modify them?
A: Modifying, e.g. renaming, some items might cause troubles.
For example the software which entries you modified might not
work properly anymore.
Q: I could translate jv16 PowerTools to my language,
would you be interested in adding it to the official distribution
package?
A: Yes, of course. Just send me the translation and that's
it. Click here
to visit a web site with more info.
Questions related to the
Registry Tool
Q: Are items marked with "N/A" always safe
to remove?
A: No.
Q: How can I tell which items to remove?
A: You just have to know which items are safe to remove.
Q: I can't recognise any of these items. What can I do?
A: Don't do anything, if you don't know what those items
are then it's always safe to leave them alone.
Questions related to the
Registry Cleaner
Q: What is the Registry Cleaner?
A: Registry Cleaner is a tool that automatically finds invalid
registry entries.
Q: How can I access the Registry Cleaner
A: Go to the Registry Tool, go to the Tools menu and select
'Registry Cleaner'.
Q: What are threads ?
A: The thread number represents the amount of registry analyser
units that are currently running. When all of them are finished,
i.e. threads are '0', Registry Cleaner is finished.
Q: When I use the Registry Cleaner the Threads value
decreases while all the other values increase. Is this normal?
A: Yes. Threads are the Registry Cleaner components which
check some part of your registry. When the component has finished
its check it will terminate itself and then the Threads value
will decrease.
Q: What are ignored entries?
A: Entries that were ignored based on the Ignore List.
Q: What is the Ignore List?
A: Ignore List contains names of programs and some general
keywords that jv16 PowerTools' Registry Cleaner should ignore
just to be sure.
Q: How I can modify the Ignore List?
A: All the files under \Settings\Ignore\ contains words
to ignore. You can view and edit the files with any text editor,
like Notepad. If you want to be sure you keep the ignored words
you added even after updating the software you should create
a new file under that dir. For example, create a file called
"MyAdditions.dat" and add your own custom ignore list
words to that file.
Q: While running the Invalid entries value was something
like 500 and after the Registry Cleaner was finished the Registry Tool info panel on the left said that there were only 400 items.
Where did 100 items go?
A: Due performance issues the Registry Cleaner does not
do a duplicate check on the items it founds. I.e. the Registry
Cleaner can find the same item many times but after it's
finished the Registry Tool will remove the duplicate entries
from the list and therefore the amount of items seems to be
decreased.
Q: Why the progress bar keeps going on, why it doesn't
show the progress of the Registry Cleaner?
A: In order to do that jv16 PowerTools would have to know
how many registry entries its going to analyse and it just doesn't
know that beforehand.
Q: Why the Time Remaining is greyed out?
A: You must run the Registry Cleaner for five times before
it starts to work. This is because it estimates the remaining
time based on your previous scans. The Time Remaining feature
is only available if you do a full scan.
Questions about the file tool
Q: I would like to just mass rename many files, not to
search for them. Is there any easy way to add the files to the
list without actually making the program to search for them?
A: Yes. The program supports drag and drop, you can just
drag the files from your desktop or from explorer to the main
window or to the file tool and the program knows how to add
the files to the list.
Q: I have done a duplicate search.
Can I somehow automatically select the oldest files so that
only one file is left alone and the duplicates are removed?
A: Yes. After you have used the
duplicate search a "smart selection" feature appears
to the Select menu. With Smart Selection you can select files
based on them last accessed date or the last modified date.
Questions about the temp
file tool
Q: What does the temp file tool do?
A: It removes the files you tell it to remove.
Q: What's the use of that? Can't I do that also with
the file tool?
A: Yes, you could do that also with the file tool. But
if you need to remove certain files on a regular bases, let's
say you want to remove *.tmp files from your C:\Temp\ dir. You
will first have to configure that data to the temp file tool
and after that you can always remove the files from that dir
with just a one click.
Q: Does the temp file tool remove just temp files, i.e.
files that are safe to remove?
A: No, the temp file tool removes the files you tell
it to remove.
Q: So, if you make it to remove all files (Either by
writing "*.*" to the Files to remove box or by checking
the "Delete everything" check box) will it remove
only temp files?
A: Absolutely not. If you tell it to remove all files,
it does what you told it to do.
Q: If the temp file tool doesn't remove just the temp
files, why it is called the temp file tool?
A: Because the only use of this kind of tool is to remove
temp files. It would be logical if it was called "The automatic
directory flusher" or something like that but that kind
of name is just too long.
Q: Does the temp file tool create backups for the files
it removes?
A: No. But if you use the Move to recycle bin as the
remove method you can later recover the removed files from your
recycle bin.

RegCleaner vs jv16
PT
Q: Should I use jv16 PowerTools or RegCleaner?
Which one is better?
A: jv16 PowerTools. RegCleaner's development is over
and in the same time jv16 PowerTools is being developed constantly.
Jv16 PowerTools is better than RegCleaner and the gap is growing
day by day.
Q: Why does the Registry
Tool is jv16 PowerTools find more invalid entries than the
one in RegCleaner?
A: See above. Jv16 PowerTools is better.
Q: But ain't the registry tool in jv16 PowerTools is
the same as RegCleaner?
A: No. RegCleaner is my old program which hasn't been
developed in the last year or something, jv16 PowerTools is
my latest program which is being developed all the time. RegCleaner
is good - jv16 PowerTools is the best.
Q: Why did you stop developing RegCleaner?
A: There were many reasons. First of all the RegCleaner
was my first real big program, when I started to code it I
was still learning the basics. Because of that the code in
that program is really horrible, it works but it's very difficult
to develop or even to maintain. Also, RegCleaner is a very
limited program, everything you can do with it has something
to do with the registry. Let's face it, this thing what I
do is still more a hobby than anything else. RegCleaner wasn't
fun to code, I must admit that. When I got bored with it I
could spend weeks without coding it. Now, with jv16 PowerTools
this is not a problem. If I get bored with the registry tool
I can improve the file tool, if it gets boring I can always
find some other parts of the PowerTools.
