Project Title: Math Puzzles

Project Summary:
In this math project students make math puzzles for each other.  The math puzzles should not contain any numbers and should require a search for information.  Here is a sample puzzle:

"Find my number.  It is the number of wheels on a tricycle, times the number of days in June, minus the number of letters in the state flower of Maryland."

Full Project Description:
In this project students will write a math "puzzle" that will require more than basic math facts.  The puzzles should send students to other sources for research.  Here is a sample puzzle:

"Find the number: the number of days in the week
minus the sides of a pentagon
times the stars on the flag of Turkey"

Teachers many encourage students to create math puzzles that will address the skills they are teaching in the classroom.



Objectives:
Students will:

1. write in the math classroom
2. search for facts to include in their math puzzles
3. engage in basic problem solving
4. identify the multiple uses of numbers in the real world
5. develop common understandings of mathematical ideas and definitions
6. acquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully
7. appreciate mathematics from a multicultural perspective
8. connect mathematics to other subjects and to the world outside the classroom
9. select an appropriate computational method
10.formulate questions and develop problem-solving strategies
11. solve word problems with a variety of structures
12. estimate and judge the reasonableness of answers
