Full Project Description:
We are a team of 5th grade classes at Clover, Oliver Ellsworth, John F. Kennedy, and Poquonock elementary schools in Windsor, CT. We have designed an original online project involving scientific inquiry by students. By collecting data on a simple predesigned experiment which is conducted in different locations during the week of May 1, 2000, preferably Tuesday, May 2nd for cohesiveness, students will test the hypothesis that a darker colored liquid absorbs more heat than a lighter colored liquid.
Classes of all ages are invited to participate. Visit our website with detailed information on the experiment, methods of analysis, and extension activities. We think this is an exciting and powerful way for students to learn the scientific process and hope that you will also think it is a great project! We have designed it to be challenging and yet very manageable within a reasonable time frame and in terms of materials which are needed. All parts of the project should be done by May 19, 2000. All experiment data is to be submitted to us by May 5, 1999. We will post on our website the compiled data for all participants by May 9th for analysis at your site.
Objectives:
Students will (1.) conduct a simple investigation to discover if solar energy affects various colored liquids differently, (2.) use telecommunications to collaborate and collect data, and (3.) analyze and interpret data to construct a reasonable explanation, and be willing to modify opinions based on evidence.
