Project Summary:
We are beginning a unit on rocks and minerals. We would like to exchange rocks and/or minerals with students from other areas. Students will go digging in their own backyards to find small rock specimens. They will identify them and label them and then use these to exchange with students from other areas.

Full Project Description:
In this project, students are asked to collect two to three small rock specimens from tieir backyard or as they travel around the state with their parents. Students research the name of the rock, whether the rock is sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous, and what uses this rock has. These written descriptions will be sent along with the rock specimens to all participants in this activity. Our study is not limited to rocks, so should students find any minerals these will also be identified and labeled.
Objectives:
Sorting, classifying, observing, awareness of the variety of rocks and minerals that make up the earth and how each are formed.
