Page Layout

Use this function to define the layout of your file's printout. Make sure that you apply the ideal resolution and color depth to your images.

Size

In this area you can set preferences relevant for the size of your file or for its resolution during printing.

Resolution

Use this list box to set the graphic resolution. If you set a higher resolution, you will have a better quality in your printout. The size of your graphic depends on the selected resolution. The size proportion between height and length will be automatically adjusted.

The quality of the printout depends to a large extent on the resolution and type of printer you are using.

To adjust the height and width manually, you must select the User setting. To avoid distortions, you should activate the Scale feature.

Width

Use this graphic to manually set the graphic's width. This field can be activated if the User setting has been previously selected in the Resolution list box.

Height

Use this list box to manually set the graphic's height. This field can be activated if the User setting has been previously selected in the Resolution list box.

Scale

Use this function to proportionally modify the height and width of your graphic when manually modifying one of these parameters. Deactivate this function if you want your graphic to be stretched or clinched in only one direction.

Page position

You can use this feature to determine the place on the page where your graphic will appear when it is printed out. The current position is marked with a red point. If you would like to edit this position, click the desired point marking. If you have selected the setting Page size as the resolution, the graphic will automatically be arranged with format filling.

Image properties

Use this dialog to set a number of image properties, such as animation.

Position X

Use this area to enter the position in the x direction (horizontal from left to right) at which the current partial begins within the overall image.

Position Y

Use this area to enter the position in the y direction (vertical from top to bottom) at which the current partial begins within the overall image.

Width

Select the width of the current partial image in pixels.

Height

Select the height of the current partial image in pixels.

Timeout

Use this area to select how long the current partial image will be visible in a GIF animation. The duration is indicated in hours, minutes, seconds, hundredths of a second.

Replace

Use this list box to select whether and by what the current image will be replaced if its timeout period has expired and if it is the last image of the animation.

Rotate

Here you will find a submenu with commands for rotating the graphic.

Free rotation angle...

90 degrees left

Rotates the image 90 degrees to the left.

90 degrees right

Rotates the image 90 degrees to the right.

Free Rotation Angle

Use this option for rotating a graphic within a free rotation angle.

Clicking the icon causes the graphic to be rotated only on the basis of the settings made. The only way to open the dialog for the required settings is via the menu.

Rotation angle selection box

This selection box contains all the angles of a circle in 45° increments. Clicking accepts the value in the rotation field located underneath.

Spin box Rotation angle

This spin box displays the specified rotation angle. This value can be set in the spin box, with the keyboard or with the arrow keys.

Orientation

In this area you can set the orientation of your graphic to the right or to the left. The graphic is rotated in the direction and at the rotation angle specified by you.

Edit Color Depth

Here you can open a submenu for editing the color depth of your graphic.

Black and White (1-bit)

Select this command for displaying your image in black and white. An image will be created that will be similar to a black & white picture in the newspaper.

The change in color representation always takes effect on the entire image. Therefore, no area should be marked in the graphic. If an area is marked, this command cannot be selected.

16 colors (4-bit)

Use this command to display an image in 16 colors. Altering the way in which colors are displayed affects the whole of the image. You cannot select a specific area of the graphic as this would deactivate this command.

16 Grayscale (4-bit)

Displays an image in 16 grayscales. Altering the color display of a graphic affects the entire image. You cannot select a specific area of the graphic as this would deactivate this command.

256 Colors (8-bit)

Displays an image in 256 colors. Altering the color display in a graphic affects the whole of the image. You cannot select a specific area of the graphic as this would deactivate this command.

256 Grayscale (8-bit)

Displays an image in 256 grayscales. Altering the color display in a graphic affects the whole of the image. You cannot select a specific area of the graphic as this would deactivate this command.

16 Million Colors (24 Bit)

Displays an image in 16 million colors. The modifications on the color display affects the whole picture, therefore, a specific area on the image should not be marked. On the contrary, that is, if an area has been marked, you will not be able to select this option.

Whether the graphic actually is displayed in 16 million colors depends on your computer's graphic card. Currently, most computers are capable of displaying 256 colors. You should keep in mind that graphics with higher color resolution also require much more storage space. Always consider the ideal resolution and color depth for your images.

Charcoal Sketch

Select this option for displaying your image as a charcoal sketch. The contours of an image will be drawn in black and the original colors will be suppressed. This option can be applied to the whole image or to just a specific part of it.

Starting the command converts your graphic into a charcoal sketch without a dialog or any security response. You can set the preferences under Tools - Options... - Document - Colors.

Mosaic...

Use this function to compress small pixel groups into rectangular surfaces with the same color. The bigger a rectangular, the less details an image will have.

Element resolution

Determine how many pixels are to be grouped into rectangles.

Width

Use these spin buttons for defining the width of each mosaic.

Height

Use these spin buttons for defining the height of each mosaic.

Definition

Use the option fields to specify the level of definition. The greater the definition, the greater the contrast between individual rectangles.

Low

Select this option for a low definition.

Medium

Select this option for a medium definition.

High

Select this option for a high definiton.

Relief

Use this command to open a dialog for defining the relief shaping of an image. Select the imaginary position of a light source in this dialog. The light source defines the shadow type and the appearance of your image, which has been converted into a relief. This function can be applied to the whole image or to specific parts of it.

Light source

Click in this field to specify the position of light source. It is represented by the red point.

Posterize

Use this function to specify the number of the poster colors in the dialog that is called up. This effect is based on the reduction of the number of colors. This means that images which looked like photographs will now appear to have be painted.

Poster colors

Use this field to determine the number of color scales to which the image is to be reduced. After selection click on OK and the image will be reduced to this number of color scales.

Pop-Art

Use this command to convert an image to a pop-art format. By applying color alienation, your image will acquire a complete new character, This function can be applied to the whole image or to only parts of it.

When you start the command, your graphic is converted into a pop art document without a dialog or security response.

Aging

Opens a dialog where you can define settings for the aging function. The image will appear somewhat darker every time this function is carried out, the colors can be changed into gray and/or brown tones.

Degree

Use the spin buttons to specify the aging intensity as a %. The higher this percentage the older the image will appear.

Solarization

This command opens a dialog for defining the settings for the solarization. Solarization is an effect that happens when foto material receives too much light exposure while being developed. This function alienates the colors by partly inverting the colors.

Effects

Specify the degree and the type of solarization in these fields.

Threshold value

Use the spin buttons to specify the percentage from which a pixel should be solarized.

Invert

Check this box to invert the pixel colors simultaneously with the solarization process.

Tile

This command opens a dialog for defining the tile effects. The image will be fragmented in tiles of the same color. By tiles it is meant something similar to the mosaic effect, which splits an image into rectangular tiles.

Element resolution

Select here the size of the tiles in pixels. The greatest possible setting is 999 image points.

Width

Specify the horizontal width of the tiles here.

Height

Specify the vertical height of the tiles here.

Definition

This command opens a dialog which enables you to specify the image definition (sharpness). This function causes a contrast increase between adjacent image points. As an effect it applies a higher border definition to your image. The image's contours stand out in a clearer way and give the image a sharper appearance.

Sharpness

Select here the desired definiton for your image.

Low

Select this option for a lower definiton.

Medium

Select this option for a normal definiton.

High

Select this option for a higher definiton.

Smooth

This command smoothes an image. By applying this function, the sharp color transitions will be reduced and the contrast differences will be adjusted, that is, the image will have a smoother character. This function can be applied to the whole graphic or to a specific part of it.

When you start the command, your graphic will be trimmed without a dialog box or any security response.

Remove Noise

This command removes individual pixels (Noise). In a similar way as for smoothing, hard color changes will be removed. At the same time the contour definition will be maintained. This function can be applied to either the whole of the graphics object or just to a selected part. If this effect is called up several times in a row the image will appear as if it was painted on a canvas.

When you select this command, all individual pixels (noise) in the graphic are deleted, without a confirmation dialog.

The disadvantage of this effect is that it also removes individual points that should be left in the image.

What's new in this version?

This section describes the StarOffice Image functions (new and modified functions).

What's new in StarOffice 5.2 ?

This section contains a short description of the new functions in StarOffice Image.

Multiframe Ability

In StarOffice Image you can now edit and manage animations or multiframe TIFs. For this purpose, a new tab has been created that enables you to switch the current frame and to edit the frame properties via a context menu. In addition, you can also insert or delete frames.

Using the keyboard in StarOffice Image

The keyboard definition in StarOffice Image has been enhanced by the following functions:

Improved Status Bar

The Status bar in StarOffice Image offers you the following additional information:

Grid for editing the pixels of graphics

You can set a grid over the image by clicking a button in the Function bar. The grid's width will depend on the selected zoom scale.

Transparent characters

By using two control elements in the Object bar it is now possible to set a continuous transparence for the character tool to be applied for contour and filling.

What's changed in StarOffice 5.2 in comparison with StarOffice 5.1?

In this section you will find a brief explanation on functions in StarOffice Image that have been modified.

Optimized graphics display and enlarged zoom range

Problems were resolved under the Windows 95/98 operating system by graphics output that is independent of the graphics driver. Speed has been increased for the output of large graphics or at high zoom levels. This made it possible to raise the maximum zoom range to 3200% (a factor of 32).

Transparence will be better displayed

Transparent colors will be directly displayed on the window's halftoned background. The display of transparent images could be therefore improved.

Improved Airbrush Tool

The output of the airbrush tool is now realized in an evenly manner. The output appears transparent to enable a softer transition.

StarOffice Image - Overview

This section contains a short overview of the capabilities of StarOffice Image.

All this is provided by StarOffice Image!

StarOffice Image is used in StarOffice to create and edit pixel graphics that are also called "bitmaps". Many bitmaps can also be created by using the drawing toolbar of StarOffice Draw and then exporting the resulting image as a pixel graphic. But tools such as the "spray can" for airbrushing effects are only available in StarOffice Image.

The use of the tools has been made uniform. If you now click on a tool, e.g.. for drawing a rectangle, it will remain activated until you select another tool or choose the selection arrow. Double clicking on a tool to keep it active is now no longer needed.

The undo function in StarOffice Image has been restricted to the last step only due to the size of pixel graphics which can often be a huge quantity of data.

Creating animated GIF images and editing them

It is now possible to create and edit pictures in StarOffice Image that consist of several image frames. Animated GIF images are the best-known example of this where one image contains several frames. The information about how long each frame is to be visible before the next frame appears is also saved here.

The frames of the animation can be moved around and altered in size as often as you wish. StarOffice Image will automatically calculate and export a complete image that will include all frames. This means that it is very easy to draw a picture of a house in the first frame, for example, and only animate a picture of a window of the house in the following frames. Enter the position of the follow-on frames in relation to the top left corner of the entire picture of the house of the initial frame and the height and width of the window. The parts of the house which would remain identical in every frame do not have to be repeated in every frame.

The properties of the frames can be entered into the context menu which is located in the tabs at the bottom of the work area of StarOffice Image.

Not only does StarOffice Image support animated GIFs but also the corresponding multiframe TIF format which is almost not known in other applications. The TIF format does not contain a time span definition for the appearance of the follow-on frame, you have to manually select the frame to be viewed from a special viewer. Do not mistake the multiframe TIF image with layers: the layers lie vertically one on the other while image frames are placed in time or space next to each other.

Paint and Spray with Transparency

Different grades of transparency can be set for the foreground and background colors, from 0 % for opaque to 99 % for almost invisible. When painting with the left mouse key lines and filled areas will be given the foreground color and the border of filled areas will be given the background color. If you are painting with the right mouse key then the foreground and background colors will be transposed.

The airbrush now paints with transparent pixels (in the foreground or background color depending on which mouse key is used). The pixels at the middle of the airbrushed area hardly have any transparency and more as you proceed to the edges. Even if you move the airbrush quickly the color applied will not be interrupted.

Zooming and Editing Details

In order to make the editing of details much more easy you can zoom up to 3200 %. There are several methods of increasing the size of the view:

The object bar contains the icon Grid which enables you to have a grid displayed. This makes the positioning of objects in your image easier. In the higher resolutions the grid marks individual pixels.

Special effects

The bitmaps can be altered by using some of the many Effects available. The Effects influence either the entire image or a rectangle that has been drawn beforehand with the mouse.

The following Effects are available and most of them have dialogs in which the parameters can be entered.

You are also able to modify the colors, the contrast and the brightness levels or change the entire image into grayscale.

Importing and Exporting in different formats

StarOffice Image is able to read and write in many graphics formats. Among others you can process GIF, JPG and PNG which are common to the Internet, and also BMP and TIF. The platform independent formats such as PBM, PGM and PPM as well as XPM and RAS can also be edited.

Altering Graphics

Use StarOffice Image to flip the images, to rotate them by fixed or floating angles and to modify the size.

The Eyedropper is used to replace specified colors in the image as a whole with other colors or transparencies which is especially practical when designing Web graphics.
